  • Life Lived Outdoors

Just stumbled across this great hiking podcast. While I live in Idaho, I learn so much practical information from hiking safety, using trail gear and apps, trail land management and even how to save money on a rental car. (Saved $300 bucks on a rental in Anchorage!) Appreciate all the effort that goes into making a podcast relevant and informative.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

473 "100 Hikes of a Lifetime - U.S.A."
Q: Is it okay to publish details about trails that are less known or near communities?
Yes, but the author discusses the responsibility to avoid overly crowding trails and to provide context such as parking, access, and local guidelines so readers can hike responsibly without harming ecosystems or communities.
473 "100 Hikes of a Lifetime - U.S.A."
Q: What safety considerations did you emphasize for readers planning long hikes?
The importance of understanding physical ability, starting with shorter through-hikes, carrying adequate gear, using GPS or maps, and being prepared for variable conditions, especially at high elevations or in monsoon climates.
473 "100 Hikes of a Lifetime - U.S.A."
Q: How did you decide which trails to include and how did you verify them?
Pearson explains a two-year research and a year of writing, combining personal hikes, input from regional experts, and input from friends groups to ensure a diverse and well-rounded selection across all states and territories.
473 "100 Hikes of a Lifetime - U.S.A."
Q: What makes the trails in your book special compared to other guidebooks?
The book treats trails as aspirational experiences with a blend of spectacular photography, cultural and historical context, and tips on planning and safety, rather than merely as a checklist of points A to B.
467 Hiking in the Grand Canyon
Q: What were the key planning considerations and any surprises you encountered along the way?
I realized the length would be around mid-teens miles with significant elevation change, and I adjusted by extending the Tonto portion to avoid the steeper Kaibab later on. Water issues and the weather also shaped the day, reminding me to check water availability and carry enough supplies, especially near Phantom Ranch and the upper rim.
