    So, so, so good!

I crave more of these conversations that reveal our expansive “american-ness”

We are a troubled bunch of muckrakers, but we are decent “frustrated millionaires” on the whole.

    Thank you! So enjoyable!

  • On Second Thought

Originally gave this a not very favorable rating because I was disappointed in the spoilers, but I did enjoy what I had heard up to that point and I’ve decided to change the review because really it was a good podcast and I’ve just got to start reading the books before I listen. The fact that there were spoilers just made me more aware that if it’s going to be an author that I haven’t read for a while and want to reread, I better do my homework first. Congratulations on a good podcast of which I... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Alex Vernon on Tim O'Brien
Q: What drew you to Tim O'Brien as a biographical subject given his own war-front storytelling?
Alex Vernon explains that his long acquaintance with O'Brien, shared military background, and the richness of his life story beyond the war made him a compelling subject, with a strong desire to contextualize his fiction and non-fiction within the wider history of the second half of the 20th century.
Susan Shillinglaw on John Steinbeck
Q: You mentioned Steinbeck's reaction to The Killers. Isn't that the one that ultimately caused the biggest reaction from Steinbeck and actually inspired him to reach out to Hemingway?
He read The Killers and then he sort of said, I can't read Hemingway anymore in some senses.
Susan Shillinglaw on John Steinbeck
Q: You mentioned that Grapes of Wrath is part of the civil war that Steinbeck saw himself as fighting. Is there a danger to writing in a didactic way or taking a position?
I suppose if you think a book is supposed to have a point to teach a lesson, there is a danger in that because fiction isn't about teaching as guidance for life.
Susan Shillinglaw on John Steinbeck
Q: Were there modernists that influenced Steinbeck or were there other writers that you said that if he was looking for an orchestral style or effusive prose style, who did he base his writings on?
He was very much influenced by the King Arthur stories, Lamorte d'Arterre, when he was a child.
Susan Shillinglaw on John Steinbeck
Q: Is Steinbeck stylistically different from Hemingway?
I think they're both trying to clarify and simplify prose. Now, it took Steinbeck a while to get there.
