  • Why the background music?

This podcast might be good, but I am giving it a 2 star because I am hard of hearing and found the background music distracting and unnecessary. I was so annoyed that it was impossible to sort out the voices from the music. I really tried to listen.

  • An Exceptional Host!

Jennifer is such a talented orator and host. Her calm and soothing voice is the perfect stage for these important, complex, and emotional stories. I am so honored to have been on the podcast and hope to come back in future seasons. Hearing from other adoptees at various stages of their adoption and reunion journeys has been essential to my own emotional stability as I navigate similar parts of my own life.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

289. Loren Stephens: "All Sorrows Can Be Borne: Part Two"
Q: Did you ask Dana's permission before embarking on the novel, and what suggestions did he offer?
Yes, she sought Dana's permission, and he encouraged treating the project as a fictionalized narrative to allow flexibility. He suggested writing with more creative license, which helped her shape the story across multiple drafts and include perspectives that weren't directly documented.
289. Loren Stephens: "All Sorrows Can Be Borne: Part Two"
Q: Thank you for sharing all of that. I wanted to ask your thoughts about kinship adoption.
Loren explains that kinship adoption can be highly valuable when adoptive parents are willing and motivated to support the child, though it can become fraught if it's treated as a mere obligation from birth parents. She notes similarities to non-kinship adoption and stresses the importance of openness about a child's background.
287. Jonathan T. Newbern: "June is Men's Mental Health Awareness Month"
Q: So do you want to talk a little bit about that part of your journey?
Jonathan describes finding out he was adopted at 18, the depression that followed, and how discovering his roots ultimately led him to connect with first family members and a broader adoptee community for support and healing.
282. Tracy Clark-Flory: "My Mother’s Daughter: Finding Myself in My Family’s Fractured Past"
Q: Did you have tons of questions for Cathy when you connected with her?
Yes, there were many questions about her childhood, life, and our mom, and I leaned into listening and learning as we built our relationship.
275. Lora Alegria: "Adoptees For Family Preservation"
Q: What is the core mission of Adoptees for Family Preservation and how do you see its impact on the adoption landscape?
AFFP aims to minimize the need for adoption by supporting families to stay together, prioritizing preservation and open communication, while also empowering adoptees through education, resources, and peer networks. The organization uses fundraising to sustain advocacy projects and collaboration with related initiatives, with a focus on tangible changes in policy and practice.
