Ellen Lettrich
Q: How has this journey affected your work with patients and students?
It made me more aware and compassionate about the realities of vocal injuries, especially for performers who rely on precise control and endurance. I now emphasize evidence-informed techniques, like centralized airflow and SOVT, and I mentor students through both clinical strategies and college auditions, demonstrating that injury recovery can coexist with a thriving career.
Ellen Lettrich
Q: When did you first notice vocal inconsistencies that led to an injury diagnosis?
Around my birthday in 2009, I experienced a sudden difficulty producing voice while laying down, which revealed a paresis. This set off a long period of study, scope assessments, and adjustments in my practice as I learned to manage the condition while continuing to teach.
Ellen Lettrich
Q: Can you walk us through a day in the life of your voice?
I'm a teletherapist and school speech pathologist; my day starts around 7:30 with speaking work until about 2:30, then I teach MTCA in the evening, which often involves demonstrations and interviews with students. I also pay attention to electrolytes and hydration to support my voice throughout a mostly virtual schedule.
Samantha Joy Pearlman
Q: Walk us through a day in the life of your voice and how you manage it.
She outlines a routine of hydration, warm-ups, occasional gym work, vocal naps, hydration management, and post-show cooldowns to balance vocal load across busy days.
Aaron Johnson, MM, PhD, CCC-SLP - Destigmatizing the Aging Voice
Q: What should voice teachers consider when working with aging singers?
Recognize that aging brings biological changes but also opportunities; tailor techniques to the individual, emphasize full-body engagement, hydration, and appropriate repertoire; encourage ongoing training to maximize function and adaptation rather than trying to regain a past sound.
