  • Incredible Masterclass! This show gives me an accessible, clear way in to understanding the craft and business of Screenwriting (as promised). The interviewer keeps things snappy and moving forward, and she has great insights and additions of her own along the way, while keeping an excellent balance of letting the guest of the week be the focus. When I try to jot down everything useful I hear, I wind up practically writing a transcript. Great show!

  • Loved acknowledgment you were not prepared, we as writers always hard on ourselves!

I loved your question on how to write chemistry. What an insightful answer! It was very helpful and provided great value to listeners like myself.

With great respect to both the interviewer and interviewees, and as a long-time listener who understands that life, professional obligations, and making a living are priorities, I agree with your own observation from your episode "The Rules of the Show," Pilar. It would be beneficial to prepare more before the interview. One of the best interviewers ... more

  • Great content even for a non-writer!

I’m an actor and producer. Not a writer. But I love this podcast. The perspective it gives me for the scripts I’m working on is invaluable. I love hearing how the sausage gets made so to speak, and Pilar’s expertise gives me a leg up when I’m evaluating and/or breaking down a script! Thank you for all you do and keep those brilliant writers coming! We need you to do our work! Teamwork makes the Dream Work!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

992. Coming of Age as a Screenwriter
Q: Can you describe the negotiation and development hurdles after winning the Nicholl?
There were discovery moments, such as signing a four-year shopping agreement, managing expectations with producers, and learning to navigate money and casting without losing core creative control.
992. Coming of Age as a Screenwriter
Q: What was your experience like adapting a play into a film, and how did you approach the visual language?
The challenge was to let the visuals carry more weight than on stage, and to ensure the film's pace and track could sustain cinematic interest while preserving the script's wit and philosophy.
992. Coming of Age as a Screenwriter
Q: So what is it now for you that feels well written in certain scripts?
It has to taste right for all characters; I must inhabit them through language and enjoy crafting the dialogue, which makes the script feel alive and cohesive.
989. Shooting for the Moon
Q: How should writers prepare for these pitch meetings to maximize opportunities?
Practice pitching with peers, record and listen to the pitch to internalize flow, and aim to turn every meeting into a long-term relationship rather than a one-off encounter.
989. Shooting for the Moon
Q: What makes a pitch compelling in their meetings with development executives?
Writers should connect personally to the project, speak authentically about their voice, and align tone with the script, while keeping the pitch concise, buddy-like, and ready to discuss the project in a real conversation.
