Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 321: Peperomia variegation, a top-heavy Homalomena and a fern called Judy
Q: Is filtered water or rainwater advisable for dracaenas (Norman the Dracaena) to avoid fluoride and chlorine damage?
Yes, filtered or rainwater is preferable for dracaenas to minimize fluoride and chlorine exposure; this helps maintain healthier growth and prevents the pale stems seen when watered with hard tap water.
Episode 321: Peperomia variegation, a top-heavy Homalomena and a fern called Judy
Q: What practical steps should Lois take to help her Homolomena Maggie recover from leaning and becoming top-heavy?
Move the plant gradually toward better light rather than giving it a sudden bright exposure, ensure a larger pot with proper root space, and avoid overwatering in high light; as growth returns with more light, the plant should become more compact and regain vigor.
Episode 321: Peperomia variegation, a top-heavy Homalomena and a fern called Judy
Q: What is the likely cause of the variegation in Peperomia argyreia (watermelon peperomia) and is it pigment-related or structural?
The variegation in Peperomia argyreia is structural (air-space or blister variegation) caused by gaps between cells in the leaf rather than pigment deficiency; the silvery appearance comes from light reflecting off these air spaces, and it is not due to chlorophyll absence.
OTL reloaded - my top tips on how to give your houseplants a holiday outside this summer
Q: What's the best way to give houseplants a staycation outdoors?
Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions, start in shade, increase exposure over days/weeks, monitor nighttime temperatures, and avoid waterlogging by not keeping pots on saucers; also keep an eye out for pests and insects when they're outside.
OTL reloaded: Aroids with Dr Peter Boyce
Q: Deborah asks for advice on potting a handful of cap-friendly houseplants in decorative pots without drainage holes, and whether to use horticultural charcoal.
The host advises that generally a drainage hole is best, but for no-drainage pots you must carefully select plants with compatible water needs, create a water table at the bottom to wick and store moisture, and avoid adding chunky materials that trap water; if possible, use porous materials and monitor watering vigilantly.
