  • The Podcast I Never Knew I Needed

Just started listening after having procrastinated for far too long and so glad I finally gave the show a try! I’ve already learned so much about light, spines vs thorns, and fungus gnats. I keep bookmarking episodes as I move my way backwards. Such a calming (for me) and informative podcast!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 314: Becoming a fulfilled plant person with Sydney Plant Guy
Q: What is the key shift you see in most plant lovers over time?
The shift is moving from an accumulation phase—buying lots of plants—to focusing on growing and developing skills, which leads to healthier plants and longer-lasting joy.
Episode 310: OTL sowalong - pollinating and growing Anthuriums from seed with The Plant Parlour
Q: What happens after pollination is successful, and how long does it take to see results?
After pollination, berries begin to form on the spadix and can take weeks to months to mature; you then harvest the seeds, clean them, and plant them promptly since they have a short viable window.
Episode 310: OTL sowalong - pollinating and growing Anthuriums from seed with The Plant Parlour
Q: If we want to get pollinating our anthuriums, where do we start?
Start by identifying the female phase with visible stigmatic fluid and prepare to collect pollen from the male phase on a separate plant or inflorescence; have tools ready (paintbrush) and keep track of which flowers you pollinate to form a successful cross.
Episode 308: A sowalong quick-start, hairy Philodendrons and why your Calathea is miserable
Q: Kylie reports a Princess Jessie Calathea drooping with brown lower leaves; what steps should be taken?
The host recommends increasing light gradually, removing any brown stringy roots, possibly repotting, ensuring the soil dries slightly between waterings, and slowly acclimating to brighter light to save the plant.
Episode 308: A sowalong quick-start, hairy Philodendrons and why your Calathea is miserable
Q: Ian asks how best to support his Ictus philodendron that has grown above the cork (coir) pole.
Jane explains that the plant is likely an anchored hemiepiphytic climber and will need continued support, pruning, and possibly swapping to a sturdier pole or larger pot to accommodate growth and prevent root binding.
