  • LOVED the recent episode with Dr. King

Thank you so much for highlighting Dr. King and the DNE program at Ohio State. I am a member of the second cohort of the DNE program and Dr. King is so inspiring. She is smart, compassionate, and everything you would want in a nurse educator. I am confident with the advent of this degree and an influx of nurse educators who went through this program, nursing students will feel the benefit!

Build Your Dream Unit Teaching Strategy
Q: What advice would you give educators who want to adopt this idea?
Don't be afraid to let students wrestle with the messy parts and keep the experience authentic and student-driven. Avoid sanitizing the scenario and push students to think through feasibility and budgeting.
Build Your Dream Unit Teaching Strategy
Q: How does this activity support competency-based education goals?
It demonstrates authentic ability in collaboration, communication, and leadership in real contexts and reframes competencies as interconnected with workload, psychological safety, and caregiver well-being.
Build Your Dream Unit Teaching Strategy
Q: What gap in traditional nursing education were you hoping to address when you created the Design Your Own Nursing Unit activity?
Traditionally leadership, healthy work environments, and well-being show up late or as electives, but workplaces treat them as essential. The activity embeds these elements so new nurses can stay in the profession and reduce burnout.
Build Your Dream Unit Teaching Strategy
Q: Can you tell us what inspired the creation of the Design Your Own Nursing Unit activity?
The activity was created because students were focusing on clinical tasks but not on how care environments actually function. The unit design teaches culture, workload distribution, communication norms, and psychological safety, helping students practice leadership early.
Veteran to BSN Pathway Initiative
Q: Could you share a bit about your background teaching student veterans and how the program started?
I am a veteran who began working with student veterans in 2015 as the first director of the Veterans to BSN track, which was funded by HRSA and evolved from our accelerated second degree program to credit military education and experience.
