As soon as they launched their Patreon, normal episode lengths dropped by half, the back half paywalled to pressure you into paying. They framed it as a bonus episode every week, but it’s really just the second half of what used to be a full show.
It’s a fine, fun and informative podcast. One thing I’d like to say is that Brendon’s parts are a bit hard to listen to. It’s because Brendon seems to have really bad breath control and strains his voice at the end of each sentence and we get to listen to a croaky voice then. It’s called vocal fry and he may want do some work on this to make this podcast an absolute gem.
Half the show is locked behind their paywall, and it’s generally the most important and interesting topics. They constantly reference content from the paid version, and tell you to subscribe to listen.
Example: Valve just released SteamOS for 3rd party devices (some of the biggest news in portable consoles) and they’re ’saving that to talk about on NPC XL’. This was one of 3 times they referenced saving key content for the paid version in this one episode.

This is such a great podcast. I’m so happy you’re doing it. I’ve been a fan of retro handheld for a long time and I’m very interested in the topics you’re talking about. I have a request. Will you do a review or talk about the Odin pro? I’m deciding if I want to buy it and I’m designing between the Retroid Pocket 4 pro or the Odin pro. Thank you!!😄
This show combined my two loves: Into The Aether and MacStories. Great to have the low key of Brendon Bigley mixed with the chaos experimentation of Federico Viticci. OTJ is here to bring balance to the force.
