I’ve been listening to this podcast over two years now, nearly three, Brad and Troy are truly lovers of film. They always do their homework on the film they’re covering and have a great discussion and have equally enjoyable guests. Definitely a podcast to recommend.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 310 - Angel's Egg
Q: How does Amano influence the film's aesthetic, and what does this collaboration reveal about controlling visual design in anime?
Amano's ethereal, Gothic illustration style pushed the project toward a more melancholic, painterly aesthetic, transforming the film into moving art and influencing broader aesthetics in anime and related media.
Episode 310 - Angel's Egg
Q: Why did Oshii shift toward anti-commercial storytelling after Lupin's rejection, and how did that shape Angel's Egg?
The rejection pushed Oshii to pursue a mode of storytelling that prioritized atmosphere and symbolism over conventional exposition, resulting in a film that is more abstract and visually mosaic than traditionally structured; this approach became a defining turn in his career.
Episode 310 - Angel's Egg
Q: What makes atmosphere, emotion, and imagery alone meaningful in Angel's Egg even without a clear narrative?
They argue that the film's dream logic, religious and philosophical imagery, and sonic landscape create a resonant emotional experience that rewards contemplation and multiple viewings, even when the plot is opaque.
Episode 292 - The Two Jakes
Q: What would you say is a major flaw in The Two Jakes?
The lack of a clear villain and the absence of danger leaves the narrative feeling flat. It's more focused on complicated relationships than on building tension typical of a noir.
Episode 292 - The Two Jakes
Q: Why do you think the character of Jack is portrayed differently between the two films?
The character in The Two Jakes feels more successful compared to where he ends in Chinatown, creating a disconnect that is hard to reconcile for viewers who remember the original. It seems more like a security consultant than the troubled investigator we saw before.
