Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Quantum CEO Series: Dr. Theau Peronnin
Q: What milestones should enterprises watch for as they evaluate readiness for quantum capabilities?
Beyond reaching a reliable logical qubit, two milestones stand out: first, a working Magic State Factory to enable universal gate sets compatible with error correction, and second, robust interconnects between modules so multiple quantum processors can operate as a single larger system without introducing significant errors. Together these milestones enable scalable, industry-relevant quantum applications and more predictable economics.
Quantum CEO Series: Dr. Theau Peronnin
Q: You talked about some of the limiting factors, qubit stability and fault tolerance. Can you dig into those in a little more detail and explain how they relate to actual quantum calculations?
Qubits currently experience far higher error rates than classical bits, necessitating error correction that can only be effective if physical qubits are reliable enough. In practice, this means achieving a threshold where enough physical qubits can be arranged and protected to yield a smaller, high-fidelity logical qubit. Until we reach that threshold and implement error correction efficiently, comparing different hardware is tricky, and benchmarks must be tied to realistic use cases rather than raw qubit counts.
Quantum CEO Series: Alan Baratz
Q: What steps should enterprises take as they evaluate quantum computing today?
Enterprises should start with identifying hard computational problems that have significant business impact, assess current solution quality, and determine whether quantum can provide a meaningful improvement; they should prioritize providers that have demonstrated improvements over classical solutions, offer reliable operation (SLAs), and have referenceable customers to show real-world effectiveness.
Quantum CEO Series: Alan Baratz
Q: What are the limiting factors that exist in quantum today?
The primary limiting factors are the need for robust error correction in gate-model systems, scalability to enough qubits, and reliable control and coherence times to ensure stable computations; annealing still faces challenges with problem classes that gate-models are better at, but offers near-term commercial viability for large-scale optimization problems.
CEO Series: Wildfire Risk with Bryan Spear
Q: How do you scale your technology to cover more weather perils and larger geographic areas, and what are the key challenges?
We've built a national-scale data and compute platform, leveraging historical reanalysis, high-resolution data, and partnerships (e.g., with NASA and CenterPoint Energy) to run billions of simulations daily, extend lead times, and deliver actionable risk insights across multiple hazards while maintaining asset-level fidelity.
