Artists in Government: Creativity as Civic Infrastructure
Q: How can municipalities buy into system-level and cultural change through artist residencies?
Build trust slowly, prototype and test with co-created plans, and show how artist-led processes help departments engage communities and improve outcomes; emphasize evaluation and scalable models.
Artists in Government: Creativity as Civic Infrastructure
Q: If your local government isn't already working with artists, where do you start?
Start with partnerships, including arts nonprofits or intermediaries, to build a support structure and gradually integrate artist residencies into an agency, then pilot projects to demonstrate value.
This City Spent $1 Million To Erase $90 Million in Residents’ Debt
Q: Is this meant to be a long-term solution to healthcare costs?
No, it is described as a band-aid or stopgap, because the underlying healthcare system remains unresolved; the hope is to demonstrate a model that could be emulated elsewhere while national reforms continue to unfold.
This City Spent $1 Million To Erase $90 Million in Residents’ Debt
Q: What determines who receives relief under the program?
Recipients are those within 400% of the federal poverty level or where debt exceeds 5% of annual income, and they must be Fayette County residents; Undo negotiates with providers to determine which debts are purchased and forgiven.
This City Spent $1 Million To Erase $90 Million in Residents’ Debt
Q: How did you identify the initial opportunity for Lexington to pursue medical debt relief?
The idea arose from conversations with Undo Medical Debt, exploring how much debt there is, what the money side would look like, and then proposing a million-dollar allocation that eventually led to a contract and debt relief waves.
