  • Solid Podcast

As a former prep player and Select 15 and 16 Team New England participant, I can say that this podcast is informative and accurate. The interviewer (Cox, I believe) asks well thought out and in depth questions that reveal behind the scenes information that can be helpful for young players and parents alike. It’s not always easy, several players and coaches that Cox interviews, often times have canned and formulaic answers that can make conversations feel empty and dry. Probably the interview tha... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The biggest standouts, snubs at Mass. Hockey boys festival
Q: Who did you think got snubbed?
The biggest snub for me was Ethan Machado, who was everywhere and clearly impactful, yet didn't make the cut; Braden Dickey also argued his case with strong Rush play and puck movement, indicating they deserved more consideration.
The biggest standouts, snubs at Mass. Hockey boys festival
Q: Who did you like the most among the 11s?
I was really impressed by a trio in the 11s—a forward and two defensemen—who clearly separated themselves with speed, vision, and playmaking; Jackson Lio stood out with elite speed and transition, while Sam Archibald and Alexander Bobrov controlled the backend and dictated play.
Providence Coach Nate Leaman
Q: What is a common mistake you see in recruiting, when you're recruiting a kid, a mistake that a family, a kid, an agent you might make or you've seen make, maybe it's common, maybe it's uncommon, that they shouldn't make, that they shouldn't do.
Being in a hurry with the process, rushing the process to try to get committed, and letting agents push for quick commitments; the best approach is patient evaluation, live scouting, and waiting for the right fit rather than urgency.
Duxbury Girls Coach Dan Najarian
Q: What sort of questions should players consider when looking to make the jump to prep school?
They should consider academics, the coach, and ensure the coach is someone who respects them and supports their development.
Duxbury Girls Coach Dan Najarian
Q: What's your take on the 15-only rule in youth hockey?
I don't love it, as it limits who can participate in the state tournament and deprives more teams of that experience.
