Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Eileen Otis, "Walmart: Made in China" (Stanford UP, 2026)
Q: Can you give us a sense of this aspect, please?
Walmart's entry into China benefited from local adaptations: leveraging regional networks, undercutting price expectations with local competitors, and relying on a dual rhetoric of egalitarian labor culture and practical benefits like comprehensive welfare, which initially attracted workers and built trust.
Weipin Tsai, "The Making of China's Post Office: Sovereignty, Modernization, and the Connection of a Nation" (Harvard UP, 2024)
Q: Could you talk a little bit about that focus?
The author explains that the book aims to avoid a dry institutional history by foregrounding human stories, voices of individuals, and a ground-level perspective on how the postal system actually operated.
Charlie Qiuli Xue and Arwen Yingting Chen, "American-Designed Shopping Malls in China" (Hong Kong UP, 2026)
Q: How did these malls start, and why were American designers invited to China in the 1980s?
The opening up policy, early architectural exchange, and a desire to modernization led Chinese municipal leaders to invite experienced American architects like John Portman to shape the urban environment, with initial projects in Beijing and Shanghai in the 1990s.
Charlie Qiuli Xue and Arwen Yingting Chen, "American-Designed Shopping Malls in China" (Hong Kong UP, 2026)
Q: Could you start off with introducing yourselves and explain why you decided to write the book together?
Charlie and I come from architectural practice and academia; our collaboration grew from decades of observing globalization's impact on China's urban modernization, and we wanted to tell the everyday life story through the lens of American-designed malls.
Mengqi Wang, "Anxious Homes: Inflexible Demand and China's Housing Market" (Cornell UP, 2026)
Q: So why this particular space? Or more specifically, what makes Nanjing's or China's urban periphery such an important space for ethnographic research?
Mengqi argues the periphery is where labor, capital, and state power intersect most visibly, revealing how land price, governance, and diverse hukou statuses shape everyday life, housing markets, and citizenship. It is a critical site to understand how urbanization concentrates both opportunity and risk for migrant populations.
