Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Fabio Lanza, "Urban Revolution: People's Communes in Beijing" (Cambridge UP, 2026)
Q: What ultimately happened to the urban communes and what does that tell us about the Great Leap Forward?
Practical failures, fiscal strain, and contradictions between production and welfare led to a retreat from urban communes by the early 1960s, with Beijing experiencing a delayed but eventual decline. This illustrates how rapid, comprehensive social engineering can falter when not supported by stable economic reforms and coherent social policy.
Fabio Lanza, "Urban Revolution: People's Communes in Beijing" (Cambridge UP, 2026)
Q: Could you explain what the urban communes were trying to achieve in relation to the state sector and urban districts?
Urban communes aimed to reorganize labor within the city by mobilizing domestic and productive labor, integrating into planning, and attempting to elevate certain workers into a more formalized state-owned-like status, while also expanding welfare services. However, conflicts over ownership forms and financing undermined these ambitions.
Fabio Lanza, "Urban Revolution: People's Communes in Beijing" (Cambridge UP, 2026)
Q: So Fabio, I wonder if you could start by telling us a little bit about how the project came about. What was it that got you interested in the everyday aspects of socialist transformation, and how did you come to focus on urban communes?
The project grew from archival work and a long-standing interest in everyday life under Maoism. The researcher shifted focus from inaccessible planning documents to case studies like the urban communes of Beijing, which could illuminate how socialist transformation played out in daily life, including gender dynamics and social reproduction.
Yoshiko Nakano and Georgina Challen, "Meiji Graves in Happy Valley: Stories of Early Japanese Residents in Hong Kong" (Hong Kong UP, 2024)
Q: What motivated you to focus on Meiji-era graves in Hong Kong?
We were struck by the absence of English-language scholarship about Japanese residents here and by the dramatic stories hidden in the 470 graves, especially the Meiji-era ones, that could illuminate how Japanese communities formed, lived, and connected to the city.
Eileen Otis, "Walmart: Made in China" (Stanford UP, 2026)
Q: Can you give us a sense of this aspect, please?
Walmart's entry into China benefited from local adaptations: leveraging regional networks, undercutting price expectations with local competitors, and relying on a dual rhetoric of egalitarian labor culture and practical benefits like comprehensive welfare, which initially attracted workers and built trust.
