  • Content/guests great but needs a better host

Every time I’m excited to listen to this podcast for tips on writing or editing manuscripts or just to hear an author or someone amazing in the literary world, I come here. However, I don’t think I’ve finished a podcast yet because this Mel guy keeps interrupting every guest SO much!! I don’t want to hear Mel! I wanna hear Betsey Bird or Lucinda Halperin! Like come on!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

An Interview with Rachel Orr
Q: How many manuscripts should an author have ready?
Have three picture-book manuscripts ready to send, and about six polished manuscripts in total in case acquisitions teams request more; this shows breadth and readiness.
An Interview with Rachel Orr
Q: What should a new author include in their query letter about their other work?
The query letter should be short and direct, mention if you have other related manuscripts or formats (e.g., picture books and novels), and not dwell on comps; the manuscript itself is king for picture books.
An Interview with Rachel Orr
Q: Are you open for submissions?
Yes, I am always open to submissions, though I am selective due to having many clients; it's best to send a concise query and a few strong picture-book manuscripts, and be ready to share more if asked.
Cindy Williams Schrauben, "Hank's Change of Heart" (The Little Press, 2025)
Q: How does the illustrator process impact the final book?
She notes that illustrators are chosen by the publisher and that the author often has limited control in the final stages, but values the balance and the illustrator's ability to add elements the author hadn't considered, such as a recurring character (opossum) that becomes a charming detail.
Cindy Williams Schrauben, "Hank's Change of Heart" (The Little Press, 2025)
Q: What inspired Hank's Change of Heart and its central message?
Cindy explains that the book grew from a roots in her hometown and a concept of heart-themed generosity. She emphasizes inviting readers to infer Hank's change of heart and connect the message to real-life acts of kindness, especially through community activities.
