Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

020 - Heidi E.Y. Stemple Loves Backmatter
Q: What final advice would you give to writers deciding what kind of backmatter to pursue for a particular book?
Start with content possibilities, consider an author's note or specific connections to the book, ensure the backmatter ties into the text and serves the child reader, and if needed, test ideas by paginating early and signaling openness to collaboration with editors or other illustrators.
020 - Heidi E.Y. Stemple Loves Backmatter
Q: Should writers always include backmatter, or are there books that don't need it?
Not all books need backmatter; if including it would distract from the core story, you can add it on a writer's website or as educator resources, and in some cases front matter or marginalia might be a better fit depending on the book's format and audience.
019 - Jorjeana Marie: Improv for Writers
Q: Would you be able to just quickly give a boom, boom, boom of what those rules are?
The guest explains a streamlined set of core improv rules—focusing on yes and, adding information, listening, and not judging what comes up—then discusses how these map onto writing, especially in creating character-driven humor and avoiding overbearing recipes.
015 - Michelle Cusolito: In the World of Nonfiction
Q: Is you've gone on actual expeditions with Woods Hole Oceanographic?
Yes, Michelle has visited and engaged with Woods Hole facilities and personnel, including Alvin, to gather experiential context, though she notes that not every trip or dive is possible due to logistical challenges and safety. The conversations with Bruce and the communications office helped secure access for her research and informed her storytelling approach.
017 - Rajani LaRocca: Writing Fueled by Joy
Q: What inspired Some Of Us and how has the book resonated amid contemporary debates about citizenship and belonging?
The book grew from personal experiences as a naturalized citizen and the joy she felt during her naturalization ceremony; it has been received as a celebration of immigrants and a reminder of the country's diverse origins.
