Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

030 - Alyssa Reynoso-Morris: Getting the Gig After Party
Q: So, maybe you could start with a nitty gritty question: which events do you find you get paid more for, and which events do you find you sell more books at?
Alyssa explains that school visits typically pay more because they have a defined budget and are work-intensive, while book sales can vary by school and classroom, with a system for pre-ordering through an order form that parents can use—often leading to different outcomes in payments and sales.
027 - Kari Lavelle & Lindsay Leslie Team Up for Author Visits
Q: Can you describe what a booking agent does and how it helped you?
A booking agent coordinates author visits, handles contracts and logistics, and reduces inbox clutter, helping the authors focus more on their presentations and content.
027 - Kari Lavelle & Lindsay Leslie Team Up for Author Visits
Q: So how long have you guys been writing picture books? Did you know each other before you started writing picture books?
We discuss how we met through SCBWI and 12 x 12, starting separate journeys, and eventually collaborating as critique partners before expanding into joint author visits.
022 - Lee Wind: Allyship in the Age of Book Banning
Q: What Pride Month plans or actions do you have coming up that listeners can engage with?
Promote queer-focused titles, celebrate upcoming releases (including a YA novel), and continue sharing and supporting diverse books, with a focus on visibility and community engagement during Pride Month.
022 - Lee Wind: Allyship in the Age of Book Banning
Q: What steps can pre-published creators take to stay encouraged and supported in this environment?
Build solidarity rather than competition, seek mentorship and grants (SCBWI offers opportunities), and actively advocate for diverse casts and creators; engage with schools and libraries, and consider the role of allies in promoting inclusive books.
