Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

022 - Lee Wind: Allyship in the Age of Book Banning
Q: What Pride Month plans or actions do you have coming up that listeners can engage with?
Promote queer-focused titles, celebrate upcoming releases (including a YA novel), and continue sharing and supporting diverse books, with a focus on visibility and community engagement during Pride Month.
022 - Lee Wind: Allyship in the Age of Book Banning
Q: What steps can pre-published creators take to stay encouraged and supported in this environment?
Build solidarity rather than competition, seek mentorship and grants (SCBWI offers opportunities), and actively advocate for diverse casts and creators; engage with schools and libraries, and consider the role of allies in promoting inclusive books.
022 - Lee Wind: Allyship in the Age of Book Banning
Q: Can you talk about what you're seeing on the ground and how it feels for you and others in the community?
There's a broad, organized campaign to intimidate teachers and librarians from bringing in diverse books, beyond simple debates about suitability; this climate pressures schools and publishers and affects acquisitions, especially for LGBTQIA+ and minority content.
020 - Heidi E.Y. Stemple Loves Backmatter
Q: What final advice would you give to writers deciding what kind of backmatter to pursue for a particular book?
Start with content possibilities, consider an author's note or specific connections to the book, ensure the backmatter ties into the text and serves the child reader, and if needed, test ideas by paginating early and signaling openness to collaboration with editors or other illustrators.
020 - Heidi E.Y. Stemple Loves Backmatter
Q: Should writers always include backmatter, or are there books that don't need it?
Not all books need backmatter; if including it would distract from the core story, you can add it on a writer's website or as educator resources, and in some cases front matter or marginalia might be a better fit depending on the book's format and audience.
