Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Gregory T. Chin and Kevin P. Gallagher, "China and the Global Economic Order" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: If the United States wants to push China out, what would that mean for the Bretton Woods institutions?
If they ever wanted to push China out, that would likely result in the end of those institutions.
Gregory T. Chin and Kevin P. Gallagher, "China and the Global Economic Order" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: Would you regard China's approach a deliberate strategy or just a random sort of approach that came up as a result of available opportunities?
Some of it was intentional on the part of China. But some of it's also kind of like coincidental or situational, there is some degree of randomness to it.
Gregory T. Chin and Kevin P. Gallagher, "China and the Global Economic Order" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: There are scholars who would advance the argument that China is intent on preserving the status quo and probably consolidating its power within these existing Bretton Woods institutions. But there are other scholars who lean towards the argument that China seeks to dismantle existing institutions. Where does your analysis in this book fit in?
We suggest that for the first two decades, China was largely a status co-actor and has looked to benefit from being a member within the Bretton Woods institutions.
Gregory T. Chin and Kevin P. Gallagher, "China and the Global Economic Order" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: Can you help us understand this more clearly? I'm talking about the hybrid institutional engagement and China's two-way countervailing power.
Our book basically makes three or four main points, some of which you've already nicely highlighted.
Nick Romeo, "The Alternative: How to Build a Just Economy" (PublicAffairs, 2024)
Q: What are some alternatives you suggest for a just economy?
Some alternatives include true cost accounting, ensuring living wages, and participatory budgeting, all aimed at addressing economic inefficiencies and promoting social welfare.
