  • #Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa

I just listened to the fabulous 2014 interview with Joan Kee on the history of contemporary art in Korea. Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method (University of Minnesota Press, 2013). I collect Tansaekwa and yet has missed this until now. Excellent thank you!

  • Fascinating show

Love this show. I particularly liked the interview with Jessica Helfand about her book. I agree that there is more to be said about the humanity of images of faces that we'd normally not look twice at like Instagram selfies and mugshots (and the encoded information you can glean about the people behind the camera!) I’m looking forward to more episodes!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Vojta Hybl, "Rocks: A Guide to the Stones Around Us and the Stories They Tell" (Frances Lincoln, 2026)
Q: So how did you decide what to include and how to approach all of this?
He describes starting with a benchmark of mineral-heavy guides and choosing to focus on rocks themselves, then compiling a comprehensive list of common rocks, validating them with specimens from museums, and weaving in the geological narratives each rock tells to make the content engaging and grounded.
Vojta Hybl, "Rocks: A Guide to the Stones Around Us and the Stories They Tell" (Frances Lincoln, 2026)
Q: Could you start us off by introducing yourself a little bit and tell us why you decided to write this book? Why might we be rock blind? And how do you think we can fix it with tools like this?
The guest explains his background as a geologist who moved into illustration and education, highlighting how combining scientific rigor with artistic storytelling makes geology more accessible. He argues everyone encounters rocks daily yet often overlooks them, and he describes the book as a way to reconnect people with rock stories through practical identification, visuals, and museum-based specimens.
Georgios Boudalis, "On the Edge: Endbands in the Bookbinding Traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean" (Legacy Press, 2022)
Q: Welcome to the show; could you introduce yourself and share how you got involved with writing this book?
Giorgios Boudalis describes his background in conservation, his role at the Museum of Byzantine Culture, and how his work in the Sinai library project and studies of early bindings led him to focus on endbands and their regional variations.
Alexis Lerner, "Post-Soviet Graffiti: Free Speech in Authoritarian States" (U Toronto Press, 2025)
Q: When and where are we sort of talking for that? And what sorts of reasons and messages are we seeing at this phase?
Alexis describes the origins of graffiti in the mid-1980s during Perestroika, where the transmission of Western culture sparked interest in graffiti among youth.
Alexis Lerner, "Post-Soviet Graffiti: Free Speech in Authoritarian States" (U Toronto Press, 2025)
Q: Could you start us off by introducing yourself a bit and tell us why you decided to write this book?
Alexis Lerner introduces herself as an assistant professor at the United States Naval Academy and explains her motivation rooted in experiences living in St. Petersburg and exploring political themes through graffiti.
