  • Fantastic

Inside scoop on cutting edge thinking in medical AI. You feel like you’re sitting having a coffee with some of the world thought leaders in medical AI. Tends to be a bit more on the ‘computational’ end rather than the clinical, but exactly what I need as a clinical informaticist facing the torrential onslaught of AI. Highly recommended. Thanks guys!!

  • Great show, 1 improvement

Would love to have the links to papers referenced on a show in the show description to save going searching for them. Given it is run by. Medical journal would have expected this :-)

  • Good show but please use AI to filter out “fillers”

Enjoyed the podcasts, but in the most recent episode (#13), the interviewee begins with “AND” in nearly every sentence! This really impacted my focusing on the content. I have to skip this episode. This is a podcast on AI. Suggest you make some investments and demonstrate how AI can filter out fillers (AND, LIKE, …) and improve the listener experience of your podcasts! Reputable podcasts or broadcasts do this step to improve listener’s experience.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

OpenAI’s Karan Singal on HealthBench and the Future of Medical AI
Q: How does a harness affect model performance, and how general is a harness across model generations?
A harness enhances inputs/outputs around the model using domain-specific prompts, tools, and resources; it is designed to be general rather than bespoke to a single model generation, maintaining usefulness as models evolve.
OpenAI’s Karan Singal on HealthBench and the Future of Medical AI
Q: What is ChatGPT for Clinicians and how does it differ from general ChatGPT?
ChatGPT for Clinicians is a specialized, clinician-focused harness of the model with advanced citation handling, templates for clinical writing, and CME tracking, designed to be safer and more accurate for medical tasks than a vanilla model.
OpenAI’s Karan Singal on HealthBench and the Future of Medical AI
Q: What were the major takeaways from HealthBench regarding model performance versus human performance and the cost of training at scale?
Key findings included rapid improvements in model performance over the prior year, the fact that smaller models could reach comparable performance to larger ones at lower costs, and the importance of baselining against physicians to understand complementarity and practical deployment.
OpenAI’s Karan Singal on HealthBench and the Future of Medical AI
Q: Could you walk us through the conception of HealthBench and why you pursued a new benchmark beyond existing ones?
HealthBench emerged from a need to evaluate models in multi-turn clinical conversations, involving hundreds of physicians across many countries, to assess safety, reliability, and practical clinical usefulness rather than relying on single-turn, exam-style tests.
AI’s Next Frontier with Dr. Kyunghyun Cho
Q: How did your path into AI begin and lead you to biology and medicine?
A mix of chance and opportunity during a difficult period in Europe, a shift from traditional neural nets to machine translation, and a realization that AI principles could be cross-applied to biology, protein design, and healthcare, especially when faced with data and compute constraints.
