  • Female physicians R outstanding

The scientistic data, explanations and applications presented by the female guest MDs are succinct, understandable, evidence based and could easily be applied to real world cases. I do not hear unfounded opinions in their talks. Excellent work selecting these presenters.

  • Good information

I really do like this podcast. There's a lot of high yield information but what bothers me is the obvious bias towards drug companies. These meds don't work as well as they make them sound.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E283 - PsychopharmaPearls: When Akathisia Looks Like Agitation with Dr. Leslie Citrome
Q: What are the recommended pharmacologic interventions for akathisia according to this discussion?
Beta-blockers and mirtazapine are recommended as effective treatments for akathisia, while anticholinergic drugs like benztropine are not helpful for akathisia; benzodiazepines can be used short-term for acute symptoms, but not as a long-term solution.
E283 - PsychopharmaPearls: When Akathisia Looks Like Agitation with Dr. Leslie Citrome
Q: Why is it important to distinguish akathisia from agitation before deciding on treatment?
Because treating presumed agitation with higher antipsychotic doses can worsen akathisia if the patient actually has akathisia, whereas recognizing akathisia guides us to reduce or switch antipsychotics and use beta-blockers or mirtazapine instead.
E278 - Re-release: Autism Spectrum Disorder and Comorbidities with Dr. Robyn Thom
Q: Could you explain the evolving understanding of ADHD as a comorbidity with ASD and why it changes treatment options?
DSM-5 allowed comorbid ADHD with ASD, which clarifies diagnosis and allows treatments to address attention and impulsivity that were previously overlooked as part of ASD, leading to more effective, targeted interventions.
E278 - Re-release: Autism Spectrum Disorder and Comorbidities with Dr. Robyn Thom
Q: What are the major comorbidities associated with ASD, and how do they affect treatment planning?
Sleep disorders, ADHD, and anxiety are most common; comorbidities can influence ASD severity and treatment response, and recognizing them opens avenues for targeted therapies, including medications and behavioral interventions.
E278 - Re-release: Autism Spectrum Disorder and Comorbidities with Dr. Robyn Thom
Q: How is autism spectrum disorder actually diagnosed, and what should clinicians consider in practice?
Diagnosis is based on behavior and clinical evaluation rather than lab tests; clinicians use definitional criteria and may employ tools like ADOS/ADIR in research, but in everyday practice they balance practicality with a thorough clinical assessment to confirm ASD while ruling out other causes.
