Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Menopause, Mental Health and the Workplace
Q: What do you think employers most often get wrong when thinking about menopause or menstrual health?
Haley White says employers can treat these experiences as something women must simply endure. She recommends awareness and training, while Victoria Brookbank emphasizes safe, confidential conversations and adjustments suited to the person's work.
Menopause, Mental Health and the Workplace
Q: Why do you think that that side of the conversation is often overlooked?
Victoria Brookbank says mental health is often overlooked generally, and menopause conversations have focused more on visible physical symptoms. Hormonal fluctuations and disrupted sleep can also affect anxiety, mood and the ability to cope with stress.
Accessible Safety Training for Deaf Workers
Q: What assumptions about safety training did you have to challenge or rethink?
Ken Kogei says the team learned that using the same training and materials for everyone did not provide equal access. They redesigned delivery to include accessible language, visual materials, demonstrations, suitable classroom layouts, and attention to different communication and literacy needs.
Accessible Safety Training for Deaf Workers
Q: What made you realize that there was a real gap when it came to occupational health and safety training, specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing communities in Kenya?
Ken Kogei says workplace audits showed that Deaf and hard-of-hearing people were often left out of training because employers faced the added cost of hiring an interpreter. He says this exclusion left people without access to essential safety information and motivated the project.
Rethinking PPE for Women in the Workplace
Q: What made you decide that phase two needed to focus not just on PPE fit but also working conditions too?
Funmi Adegbola explains that poor fit and thermal burden are connected: non-breathable materials can trap heat, increase physiological strain and prompt workers to remove PPE, compromising safety.
