Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"A Hollywood Ending": Yaron Weitzman on his new book about LeBron James & the Lakers, plus Early NBA MVP Top 10
Q: What do you think of LeBron James as a person?
LeBron is a complex individual whose motivations often confuse people, and it's hard to pinpoint exactly what drives him.
"A Hollywood Ending": Yaron Weitzman on his new book about LeBron James & the Lakers, plus Early NBA MVP Top 10
Q: Is Rob Pelinka a good basketball executive?
He manages up well and has some skills in securing the owner's approval, but there have been clear mistakes in managing the team and salary cap.
"A Hollywood Ending": Yaron Weitzman on his new book about LeBron James & the Lakers, plus Early NBA MVP Top 10
Q: What surprised you in your reporting about the Lakers?
The extent of dysfunction and the personal dynamics, especially within the Buss family, surprised me.
SHEA SERRANO (!!!) on "Expensive Basketball" and the Most Expensive NBA Teams in History
Q: You write in a way that nobody else writes, which I think correlates directly to what you just said. When you write in the way that you write, where you are putting yourself out there in a way where you're writing in a way where I'm sure you look at some things that you write sometimes and you're like, well, this is not really ridiculous. But you have that trust in yourself and the confidence in yourself to leave those words on the page. So I'm curious if like still now 10 years into your career as a full-time writer, almost 20 years into your career as a writer period, do you still get those moments where you're like, can I really put this sentence in this book or do you still have those doubts?
I don't worry too much about that part because that's what the editors work for. The editor will tell me, hey, this isn't making any sense. When I'm writing, I don't think much about what I should or shouldn't try. I just sort of trust my instinct at this point, my gut, and then I also rely on the trust that I have with the readers. Most of the people who are going to buy this book, this won't be the first book of mine that they bought, so they sort of know what's going to happen.
