  • Good guy Better music podcast

Brian is a very charismatic host. Very knowledgeable about music. There are very few bands that I mention to him that he doesn’t already know, at least, to some degree.

His interviews are always interesting. And it’s fun to see where the mixtape will go.

No matter what genre of music you like there is an episode for you.

This show is a ton of fun and brings back the memories of making mixtapes back in the day

Smash Mouth's Paul De Lisle on All Star, Shrek, and the Long Road to Mercury Comet
Q: What was the impact of All Star on Smash Mouth's career and how did the band navigate being seen as a one-hit wonder?
All Star became a multi-generational anthem beyond its initial release, while the band learned to counter the one-hit-wonder stigma by continually delivering hits like The Morning Comes and Pacific Coast Party and emphasizing the quality of their broader catalog, not just a single track.
Smash Mouth's Paul De Lisle on All Star, Shrek, and the Long Road to Mercury Comet
Q: How did the band approach recording Fush Yu Mang without a traditional major-label process, and what did the early success teach you?
They recorded a major-label-quality record independently first, then leveraged a two-week studio period with a top producer to capture a ready-to-go sound; this showed they could deliver powerful material on their own terms and build momentum through strong songs rather than just label backing.
Smash Mouth's Paul De Lisle on All Star, Shrek, and the Long Road to Mercury Comet
Q: What inspired Smash Mouth's name and early identity, and how did that shape their trajectory?
The name came from a playful misunderstanding around football terminology and later carried a meaning about smashing out hits; the origin story underscored their willingness to blend diverse influences and take risks, setting up a non-traditional path to success.
Rush Deep Cuts: Uncovering 15 Hidden Gems to Celebrate The Band's Fifty Something Tour
Q: Why is a particular track considered a deep cut given its chart performance or fan reception?
The hosts discuss using a low live-play count threshold (less than 200 performances) as a practical benchmark, while acknowledging exceptions where a track may be technically a single yet still be rare in live sets.
Rush Deep Cuts: Uncovering 15 Hidden Gems to Celebrate The Band's Fifty Something Tour
Q: What's track one on your playlist?
Brian explains he's selecting tracks in reverse chronological order, starting with a 2012 song and moving backward to older material, to illustrate the evolution of Rush's deep cuts.
