She has access to a Montessori classroom environment with occasional cultural language discussions, a Spanish teacher in school, and a local Italian-speaking community where families exchange books and participate in activities; the child is exposed to multiple languages through peers and organized events.

Q: How is your daughter navigating language use when you're all together, especially with you and your husband?

She tends to speak English with the mother due to fluency, but there are moments of resistance when Italian is spoken; the parent describes it as a superpower and reinforces that she can speak any language, with the mother willing to use either language to communicate.

Q: So let's start just by talking about what has been going on lately with bilingualism in your family and you're now three and a half year old daughter, what does it look like in your home?

The family is intentionally making the home an Italian space while allowing English to come in through school and daily interactions. They read a lot at home, speak Italian with grandparents in Italy, and sometimes repeat themselves in Italian after English to model code-switching and flexibility. The father is increasingly taking an active role in language correction and consistency.

65. Should you be speaking only the minority language at home?

Q: At what point would it make sense to switch to only speaking English at home?

Based on the teacher perspective, it could make sense to start switching now if the other parent is comfortable speaking English, with a gradual imbalance such as 90-10 or 80-20, prioritizing increased English input and social motivation for the child.

63. How do you define fluency?

Q: What does fluency really mean in the context of raising multilingual children?

Fluency is multi-dimensional, including conversational ability, reading, and writing, and it evolves with ongoing exposure; there isn't a fixed endpoint, and maintaining it requires regular input and meaningful use.
