Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Birth trauma & healing through EMDR with Bethan from Advocates and Angels | S3E51
Q: What would you say to someone considering EMDR who is worried it might be too hard?
Bethan emphasizes that the process can be managed, with a therapist guiding pacing and focus on one issue at a time, making it less frightening and more doable than expected.
Birth trauma & healing through EMDR with Bethan from Advocates and Angels | S3E51
Q: What did EMDR change for your daily life and your ability to manage memories?
It helped differentiate trauma from real life, reduced the overwhelming 'to-do' mental space, and allowed her to experience emotions without being consumed by them, leading to more space and normal conversation.
Birth trauma & healing through EMDR with Bethan from Advocates and Angels | S3E51
Q: Can you talk to us a little bit about what EMDR is and how it helped you?
Bethan explains that EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) works by guiding the brain to process trauma, not by hypnotizing or delivering therapy directly; it allowed her to process emotions safely and gradually, reducing her brain's stuck state and increasing emotional tolerance.
Using Tetris and the Butterfly Hug to help process trauma after NICU with Victoria Craig | S3E50
Q: Can you explain what inspired you to explore these techniques for NICU parents?
My own experience as a NICU parent and clinician showed that parents carry trauma long after discharge, so I wanted to test practical, self-administered methods that could be used immediately to dampen distress without needing a therapist on hand.
Dear NICU Mama: Therapeutic writing, finding meaning after trauma and NICU’s impact on maternal mental health | S3E54
Q: What advice would you give to someone in the thick of it who struggles to see hope or meaning?
Allow yourself to feel sadness and anger without judgment, seek supportive spaces like therapy and community, and recognize that healing is a long process; your grief is valid and your story is significant, not something you must rush through.
