We created this podcast in recognition that there are a number of podcasts for the American "left," but many of them focus heavily on the organizing of social democrats, progressives, and liberal democrats. Aside from that, on the left we are always fighting a war of ideas and if we do not continue to build platforms to share those ideas and the stories of their implementation from a leftist persp... more

  • Enunciation!

One star is for host Josh who I cannot understand because he speaks very fast without the necessary intonation, pitch, power or pace that allows a podcast listener without the visual clues that lip reading provides to understand Josh speaking the English language. I am very interested in the topics and assume that they would be valuable, informative and necessary information in the current chaos and political environment. The topics alone are obviously a 5 star rating. However rn the episodes Jo... more

  • Excellent

This podcast and the This is Solidarity podcast are two of the best actual left (not liberal!) sources of information out there. The lens with which they view and discuss the topics is intersectional and much needed. Would love

for the host to have some deeper questions at times to tie history or solidarity movements together.

  • Great topics and guests

It’s great to see a podcast like this in general, but especially right now with fascist and authoritarian movements here and abroad. This has an excellent range of topics and guests with credibility and integrity.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Financialization of the Culture industries & the False Promises of Spotify
Q: What is meant by the term Spotify Core, and how does it reflect the broader financialized tendencies in music and culture?
Spotify Core refers to a recognizable, lean sound that fits playlist-driven discovery and streaming interfaces, shaping what becomes popular due to algorithmic promotion and streaming economics. This reflects financialized tendencies by privileging styles and productions that perform well on playlists, sometimes at the expense of experimentation and genre diversity.
The Financialization of the Culture industries & the False Promises of Spotify
Q: Can you elaborate on the idea of platform capitalism and how Spotify's ambitions compared to Uber and Airbnb, especially in the context of monopoly and control over the market?
The comparison to Uber and Airbnb highlights how Spotify sought to commodify access and control within the music market, using a platform that could consolidate suppliers (labels/artists) and demand (listeners) under a single interface. This craved monopoly power, enabling wage suppression and market dominance through scalable, data-driven strategies that favored profitability over artisanal diversity.
The Financialization of the Culture industries & the False Promises of Spotify
Q: So to begin us off, you note that Spotify merges away to compete with piracy, and it framed itself as being a democratizing force of working musicians. How did this promise relate to the data-driven reality you describe?
Spotify presented itself as a way for artists to understand and connect with their audiences through data, using podcasts and dashboards like Spotify for Artists to justify streaming as a path to touring and merch. In practice, the data did not translate into broad-based improvements for most artists; it often reinforced precarity by aligning incentives with platform economics and editorial control rather than necessarily expanding artist opportunity.
The Revolt Eclipses Whatever The World Has to Offer with Idris Robinson
Q: What does your concept of civil war as a reality within the heart of empire imply for strategic organizing and where should activists focus their efforts?
Civil war is framed as a structural, ongoing process of fracture within American society; the emphasis is on preparing, localizing, and reforming governance in smaller, federated units to advance emancipation, while recognizing potential breakups of the central state as opportunities for transformative change.
The Revolt Eclipses Whatever The World Has to Offer with Idris Robinson
Q: How do you see the role of infrastructure and logistics in modern revolutions, and why is the old image of workers taking over the factory insufficient?
He contends that the contemporary built environment—electric grids, water systems, and transport networks—must be understood and leveraged as engines of resistance; revolution today involves navigating and transforming these hubs to sustain insurrection beyond traditional factory-centric models.
