  • Interviewer

Mike Raine, the interviewer provides an amateur experience to listeners at best! His style is to ask leading questions to satisfy his own prejudice and unconscious bias. He is clearly untrained and is happy to publish factually inaccurate material to boost his following. His understanding of consent and acting with integrity is poor. The best way to describe the interviewer is an Oprah Winfrey wannabe

Simon Rogers – National Trust Countryside Area Manager for Eryri
Q: What does your role as countryside manager involve on a day-to-day basis?
I lead the ranger team, manage footpath works, supervise estate operations, and coordinate with farmers and partners to deliver conservation and access goals.
Tim Cain MBE - Mountain Rescue Search Dog Handler, Outdoor First Aid trainer and former British Army infantry officer.
Q: Any books you recommend for leadership in the outdoors?
Mountain Leader, a Practical Manual is a recommended reference, along with broader leadership and leadership development resources, to understand practical applications on the hill.
Tim Cain MBE - Mountain Rescue Search Dog Handler, Outdoor First Aid trainer and former British Army infantry officer.
Q: How can Mountain Leaders be better informed?
Read about adventures, listen to podcasts, take courses, and use practical resources like Adventure Smart to learn how to behave and lead effectively on the hill.
Tim Cain MBE - Mountain Rescue Search Dog Handler, Outdoor First Aid trainer and former British Army infantry officer.
Q: Are leaders born or can they be trained?
There is evidence that some people are more predisposed to leadership, but leadership can be developed through experience, leading by example, and consciously cultivating values-based leadership.
Martin Chester – UIAGM guide, Level 5 Kayak Coach and Chief Instructor at Joint Services Mountain Training.
Q: How did you transition from freelance guiding to a full-time leadership role, and what did you learn about developing others?
The shift was driven by a desire to mentor and shape a team, using my experience to structure staff development, training, and mentorship rather than focusing solely on individual expeditions. The emphasis is on helping instructors grow and become capable educators and leaders rather than just performing on the hill.
