  • A remarkable and humane resource

I’ve been listening for a decade or so, and this show has been a constant reminder that our shared and individual struggles are worth looking at, working at, and being honest about. Paul is a rare treasure, and the guests bring heaps of knowledge. This is a cornerstone of my main rotation.

  • An authentically raw approach to mental health

Paul’s podcast is something we need more of in this world. The objectivity, open-mindedness, and unprejudiced way of structuring it – just “laying out all the chips on the table” for everyone to see is refreshing, nurturing, and joyful (even the hard parts).

  • This show is a genuine companion when times are tough.

A study buddy recommended this show during a class once and I have held onto that recommendation for so long. I never knew how important and relevant it would become.

So many times I have clicked on an episode and just gone for a journey… Guests really open up about their honest experiences and it make me feel less alone in the world… plus Paul is such a likeable fellow who engages in a super genuine way. I really enjoy the depth of conversation and the breath of topics covered.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#809 Weinstein Survivor Turned Therapist - Kaja Sokola
Q: What are the similarities and differences between physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, and how do they ripple into a survivor's life?
Kaja explains that abuse can be layered and interwoven; sexual abuse deeply impacts trust and safety, while other forms of abuse can compound the harm. Therapy focuses on understanding these dynamics, restoring a sense of safety, and addressing the emotional wounds that shape intimacy and behavior.
#808 Perfectly Hidden Depression - Dr Margaret Rutherford
Q: When did you first realize there were gendered expectations that affected you, especially in the South?
It emerged as a deep contrast between how boys and girls were treated, with women expected to marry after college while men were steered toward college or careers; this realization came early through therapy and personal experience, helping me understand how control and autonomy influence my own life and patients.
#806 - Best Of: Being An Outsider - Rama
Q: How did you manage to heal and rebuild after such intense abuse and discrimination?
Through therapy, support groups, building a trusted relationship with Haydn, engaging in meaningful work, and finding healthy outlets like advocacy and creative expression, Rama describes gradual healing and a sense of agency.
#806 - Best Of: Being An Outsider - Rama
Q: Give me some of the greatest hits of shit that gets under your skin about Arabs and how you respond?
Rama explains the stereotypes she faces, from being labeled terrorists to assumptions about women's roles, and emphasizes the need to defend her culture while not letting broad generalizations define her experience.
#805 Eating Disorders & Males -Retired Boxer Danny O'Connor
Q: In therapy, were any childhood or adolescence experiences uncovered that shed light on the eating disorder?
He describes a long process of self-assessment and trauma work, including sports psychology, mindfulness, and other therapies, which gradually revealed how predispositions and past experiences contributed to the disorder and the path to recovery.
