  • Medical education gold

Perfect concise bite of information perfect for mrcp revision or for clinical practice as a refresher. I used these as a trainee and I still listen as a physician, great top up to keep medical knowledge sharp.

  • Fantastic learning resource!

Fantastic podcast! Great learning - succinct, concise and very relevant topics. Great for revision, and I listen to it on my long walks and doing chores.

Also very grateful for all of the mental health focus in times of Covid - but please, please, don’t forget about the medicine. Sometimes taking the focus of the pandemic is self care too. Thank you!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 301: Bone Marrow Failure
Q: What are some definitive treatments for congenital bone marrow failure?
Stem cell transplantation remains the main definitive treatment for many congenital forms, with careful consideration of donor compatibility and conditioning regimens due to higher risks of graft-versus-host disease and toxicity.
Episode 301: Bone Marrow Failure
Q: What happens in the bone marrow to cause failure and how can it be categorized?
Bone marrow failure can occur if one or more lineages stop producing cells or if the cells produced are dysfunctional; it can be an umbrella term with congenital or acquired subtypes, and it may affect a single lineage or all three, with classification guiding biopsy and testing.
Episode 300: Parkinson's Disease Part 2
Q: What conditions can mimic Parkinson's disease and how can clinicians differentiate Parkinson's plus conditions from idiopathic PD in practice?
Dr. Islam highlights drug-induced parkinsonism as a common mimic, vascular Parkinsonism in patients with cardiovascular risk, and Parkinson's plus diseases like PSP and MSA, which show early eye signs, rapid progression, and falls; MRI features can aid differentiation.
Episode 300: Parkinson's Disease Part 2
Q: Could you talk us through the key things you look for on examination when assessing a patient with suspected Parkinson's disease?
Dr. Islam describes dividing the examination into cranial nerves and limbs, stresses documenting eye movements early, assessing speech, and noting asymmetrical limb signs and writing changes such as micrographia to differentiate PD from mimics.
Episode 299: Understanding Hypertension part 2
Q: Under the current guidance, what pharmacological measures are recommended and how do you apply them in practice?
Start with ACE inhibitors or ARBs in younger patients, switch to calcium channel blockers for those over 55 or of black ethnicity, add a thiazide diuretic as a second-line when needed, and progress to aldosterone antagonists or beta blockers based on comorbid conditions, always prioritizing a patient-centered, functional plan.
