A great podcast with clear, easy to follow advice. I’ve recommended it to so many people. Given so many doctors are leaving the NHS or medicine entirely, and at many different stages (F1s to experienced consultants), I wonder if you’d consider doing an episode with advice about your NHS pension if you leave the NHS well before retirement and are unlikely to return? Info like any steps to take in preparation; what salary will be counted if you leave with pension in different schemes; should you t... more

  • Brave, informative, relevant

As a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, this podcast covers extremely taboo topics that often are a mystery to most UK trained doctors. Great podcast!

  • Must know for doctors

This podcast has a wealth of information on everything possible related to money and finance for doctors, and also savings tips and information catered to junior doctors as well as consultants and GPs. I have learned a lot from this. Some episodes are very complex and hard to understand though, especially topics related to tax, pensions and investments. However overall it is a great podcast for doctors at any point in their career.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 337: NHS Pension for New (and current) Doctors: The £7 Billion Question
Q: How is the NHS pension actually funded and how does it grow over time?
The pension grows year by year as you 'bank' a portion of each year's earnings (one divided by 54), with inflation uplifts and a small additional growth percentage; it is government-backed and not invested in markets.
Ep 335: Why is buying/selling my house taking so long??
Q: What is the role of indemnity insurance in this process and when is it appropriate?
Indemnity insurance is used to cover costs when a defect is identified but cannot be immediately remedied, such as missing building regulations or outdated certificates. It's not a cure-all and depends on the specific risk; sometimes it's recommended, sometimes not.
Ep 335: Why is buying/selling my house taking so long??
Q: What does the process look like from the buyer's perspective in terms of the searches and the information that comes back?
Donna explains that searches generate a core set from the local authority and other bodies, and then inquiries are raised to clarify or obtain missing information. The aim is to ensure nothing will cause future issues, with specialists guiding buyers through any red flags.
Ep 334: From bad to worse? GP contract update
Q: What positive aspects do you see in the new contract, if any?
Positives include funding aimed at recruitment and retention of GPs and the ARRS allocation to bring in more staff, as well as it not being a cut in absolute terms, which supporters view as a stabilization.
Ep 334: From bad to worse? GP contract update
Q: Could you just tell us a little bit more about how the Carr-Hill funding works and why some practices aren't paid for all their patients?
Carr-Hill measures population needs and allocates a fixed sum, but distribution is imperfect; some patient groups and list sizes aren't fully covered due to the formula, creating variability in payments among practices.
