  • Brewing Science Heaven!

I’ve been listening to beer podcasts for well over a decade now, and MBAA's podcast is by far the best for getting the most succinct brewing industry technical knowledge! This podcast sold me on finally getting a membership with the MBAA too. Yeah, the audio/production quality for the first several episodes were garbage (when not being a brewer, I’m a broadcast journalist with the Air National Guard), but it’s much better now. Keep that in mind for the first several if you find your face conform... more

  • The best beer education out there

I love attending CBC and watching BA, ASBC and MB webcast seminars, but IMHO, this is the most educational 30 - 40 minute investment a pro brewer can make. Episode after episode is packed with valuable information.

An informative technical brewing podcast but the sound quality makes it unlistenable.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 362: Aroma Hop Shelf Life
Q: What did you find about HSI as a predictor for aroma hops, and how should brewers use it going forward?
HSI is useful as a general flag for oxidation but does not reliably predict aroma quality across all varieties; it should be used in conjunction with initial pelleting values and sensory data, especially for aroma-focused hops like Citra.
Episode 362: Aroma Hop Shelf Life
Q: Walk listeners through what that means for interpreting your results. Specifically, how do you distinguish a storage effect from a vintage effect?
The researchers explain that these are not a longitudinal, same-lot study; they compare samples from different crop years stored for varying durations, and use some overlapping data to assess trends while acknowledging potential vintage effects that can confound aging signals.
Episode 358: Lager Sensory at von Trapp
Q: What are the first practical steps a brewery should implement tomorrow to lock in lager quality?
Start a sensory program day one, set targets, have as many people taste as possible, and distinguish between flaws and features to avoid blind spots.
Episode 358: Lager Sensory at von Trapp
Q: When you're building a sensory panel at a small brewery, what's the minimum viable program that actually moves the needle?
A good baseline is about ten dedicated tasters, involve tasting room staff and managers, and ensure there is a clear sensory lead to run the program with consistency and objectivity.
Episode 232: 074 (US Vista)
Q: What are the funding dynamics for public hop breeding and how have they evolved?
Funding has shifted from underfunded to fully funded for core scientists, with ongoing supplemental grants; collaborations with industry and universities, plus a Brewers Association initiative, have expanded resources and capability for public programs.
