This episode on regenerative practices was fascinating! Have you considered (or already done) episodes on Kernza (a perennial with soil-stabilizing roots vs. the annual barley) or Fonio (drought tolerant, which Garrett Oliver is passionate about)?

  • Great Content, Horrible Host

This podcast has a lot of great content. It has brewers from around the world talking about their beers, with information that would appeal to craft beer drinkers, home brewers, and pro brewers. But what keeps it from being a great podcast is the host. Early episodes were hosted by John Holl who both knows the brewing industry like the back of his hand and has a voice that sounds like he belongs on NPR. He asked informed questions and wasn’t afraid to ask uncomfortable questions to brewers about... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

477: Source Material with Firestone Walker: Anywhere & Everywhere
Q: How do you approach blending Nelson with other hops for an XPA or similar beer?
We start with a clear target for the beer's aroma and mouthfeel, then select Nelson lots that show the right precision and balance. We blend in complementary hops to soften edges and enhance depth, always prioritizing a clean, punchy core that still supports the beer's drinkability.
477: Source Material with Firestone Walker: Anywhere & Everywhere
Q: Brent, tell us about Nelson and why it's become a signature for NZ hops.
Nelson Sauvin has a distinct Sauvignon Blanc–style profile with citrus, tropical notes and a grapey, wine-like character. The different soils and microclimates in the region create subtle variations, and we use sensory-driven selection to lock in the best lots for specific beer styles.
475: CB&B Podcast Live from Philadelphia!
Q: How do you approach selecting hops when aiming for specific sulfur profiles?
We balance intensity with fruit-forward characteristics and use variables like temperature, contact time, and cone shaving to tune the sulfur outcome rather than chasing the loudest hop lot.
Episode 473: Source Material with Firestone Walker: Deep Roots and Twisting Bines
Q: What challenges have you faced with market cycles, and how are you planning to navigate them this year?
The speakers discuss balancing inventory, not over-contracting, and maintaining strong communication with suppliers to adapt to both oversupply and shortages, while focusing on acquiring fresh aroma hops for IPA-forward beers.
Episode 473: Source Material with Firestone Walker: Deep Roots and Twisting Bines
Q: How does Firestone Walker approach hop selection and what role do Hollingbery and Son play in that process?
Firestone Walker uses a team-based, sensory-driven selection process that combines on-site table tastings, away-field scouting, and a shared palate with Hollingbery. They emphasize consistency, avoiding outlier flavors, and aligning purchases with planned beer styles and market needs.
