  • A beautiful podcast all about beer! Don and Em pair wonderfully together getting interesting topics and making everything so fun to learn. The Brewer To Brewer podcast is also a fascinating idea that is endlessly fun. Both are definitely some of my favorite podcasts and a great way to learn more about beer!

  • Em and Don

I only really listen to the AAB episodes with Em and Don. They're both great, super knowledgeable and I like the topics they pick. I don't listen to the brewer to brewer ones.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Brewer to Brewer: Mike Pallen and Brad West
Q: What have been the key drivers of Xul's growth and culture?
A heavy emphasis on outside perspectives, strong processes led by Tara Thacker, a hospitality-first approach at festivals, and a disciplined focus on lean operations and staff development that allowed scalable growth across two cities.
Brewer to Brewer: Mike Pallen and Brad West
Q: So Brad, how did the initial meeting that sparked the collaboration come about?
It started with six beers sent to Brad's friend in Madison, which led to a visit and a natural partnership that grew as they respected each other's work and philosophies, especially during the COVID years when brewer-to-brewer contact was limited.
Brewer to Brewer: Tom Knowlton and Mike Pallen
Q: How do you balance core beers with innovative LTOs to stay relevant?
The guests discuss segmenting into core, LTO, and taproom-focused offerings; core beers provide shelf stability and consistency, LTOs drive excitement and novelty, and taproom experiences, cocktails, and event-driven sales help sustain growth.
Brewer to Brewer: Tom Knowlton and Mike Pallen
Q: How has saying yes to opportunities shaped Mikerphone's growth and opportunities for collaboration?
Mike explains that being a small, owner-operated brewery allows flexible decision-making, and saying yes to collaborations and opportunities has helped grow the brand, learn, and expand its reach, though he also notes there was a time he said no and learned from it.
Brewer to Brewer: Joey Pepper-Mellusi and Mike Schallau
Q: What would your advice be to someone looking to open a small brewery or small brew pub right now?
Have a point of view and a clear talking point, don't just open a brewery for the sake of it; understand your business constraints and where you're willing to compromise, and be prepared for the realities of climate and market conditions.
