This is a fantastic podcast. It has so much. First, you’ll learn fabulous facts about the animal kingdom: everything from the fact that the hairs on some spiders are capable of perceiving things smaller than a photon to the fact that the head on a hammer head shark is basically a metal (actually, electric field) detector that can be used to find buried treasure (actually, meals). Second, you’ll learn marvelous things about the underlying mechanics of perception, like for instance that the chemis... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How nature restores the mind
Q: So can you tell us about that work?
It was a kind of interesting study where we focused on the relationship between tree canopy and health regarding cardiometabolic disorders.
How nature restores the mind
Q: Could you say a little bit about that work?
We were looking at working memory deficits in people with depression, and we found that interacting with nature would be beneficial for participants with clinical depression.
How nature restores the mind
Q: Could you unpack that a little bit?
We talk about attention coming in two flavors: directed attention, which is fatigable or depletable, and involuntary attention, which is automatically captured by interesting stimulation.
From the archive: Revisiting the dawn of human cognition
Q: How do you see this paper building on that?
We've produced a paper updating the model based on 23 years of new research and techniques, allowing us to refine our understanding of the origins of human behavior across different regions in Africa.
From the archive: Revisiting the dawn of human cognition
Q: Could you say a little bit more about what went into that model, what people were thinking about this sort of cognitive revolution?
It's true that there was a flowering of culture during the last Ice Age, but the idea that this was the first flowering of modern human culture, a revolutionary event, is wrong. This model was based on limited research in Africa which led to misconceptions about the significance of the European Upper Paleolithic.
