  • Great podcast!

I’ve been a liveaboard with my bf almost 5 years and definitely enjoy listening to the experiences of other ocean dwellers and the questions asked by the interviewer here. This is quite a very informative podcast too. Love it!

  • Extremely awkward.. how do you not know who Lin Pardey is?

I want to support anyone starting a sailing pod. There are not enough, we desperately need more content. But here you have one of the biggest legends in the history of cruising, one of the great philosophers, and it’s clear you don’t have a clue who she is. How do you not start the pod by saying how much you learned from this book or that? Or at least from like you read the book. Super disappointing and frankly disrespectful. Next time a legend agrees to do a show, please do some homework. This ... more

79. Thirty Days Alone in the Pacific — What It’s Really Like
Q: How did you stay safe and make decisions when you were tired and alone far from help?
I kept decisions simple and conservative, using half-main and full genoa to balance risk, and relied on autopilot wind-tracking to reduce constant steering, reserving bigger changes for when I wasn't fatigued; I also prepared mentally for squalls as short-lived events rather than threats to push through.
77. Sailing Wisdom with Lin Pardey & David Haigh: Seamanship, Simplicity, and Offshore Lessons
Q: What are your strategies these days for staying present and finding joy even in the more challenging moments?
Staying well-rested and maintaining a focus on enjoyment helps sailors navigate the challenges of offshore passages.
77. Sailing Wisdom with Lin Pardey & David Haigh: Seamanship, Simplicity, and Offshore Lessons
Q: What do you think are some core skills that everyone should have or master before they're setting off?
Learning to sail in a small boat can teach essential skills, enabling sailors to handle their boats confidently without being overly reliant on technology.
77. Sailing Wisdom with Lin Pardey & David Haigh: Seamanship, Simplicity, and Offshore Lessons
Q: What do you think are some of the most overlooked aspects of getting a boat and the crew ready for extended passages?
Preparation is key, including ensuring that the crew is ready to handle unexpected situations safely and understanding the equipment, such as the parachute anchor.
77. Sailing Wisdom with Lin Pardey & David Haigh: Seamanship, Simplicity, and Offshore Lessons
Q: What is it that drew you to such a challenging route?
Larry's dream was to sail around Cape Horn, and despite initial hesitation, Lin agreed to prepare for the voyage, emphasizing the importance of proper preparation and self-reassurance.
