Doing Your Part with Jessica Caraos
Q: What insights have you drawn from the Educators' Neighborhood community that you've applied to your practice?
The cohort has shown me the value of diverse viewpoints and collaboration in child-centered work. It reinforced that being part of a community helps me reflect on my practice, understand different experiences, and keep imagination, wonder, and play at the core of teaching.
Doing Your Part with Jessica Caraos
Q: What does it mean to be a 'helper' in your work with kids and families?
Being a helper means being a safe space and a person who empowers others, not just solving problems. It involves giving genuine encouragement, recognizing the needs of others, and doing small acts that brighten someone's day without needing to rescue them, which aligns with Fred Rogers' ethos.
Doing Your Part with Jessica Caraos
Q: How do you keep such young students engaged in a predominantly online setting?
Engagement comes from high energy, frequent movement, brain breaks, and varied activities that make learning dynamic. I incorporate manipulatives and quick, interactive tasks to maintain pace and attention, and I adapt to the kids' energy levels to keep them from wandering off screen.
Doing Your Part with Jessica Caraos
Q: Can you walk us through what a typical school day looks like for you as a virtual teacher?
I host live Zoom classes daily in 30‑minute blocks for different subjects, teaching both 4K and 5K students who are all in Wisconsin. Lessons are delivered in a hybrid way with home activities guided by learning coaches, and the schedule includes small groups and staff meetings in the afternoons to keep everything organized and engaging.
Helping Yourself with Kalya McClucas
Q: What inspired you to go into psychology and choose clinical pediatric psychology?
I wanted to work with people and make an impact without the blood and gore of nursing, and I fell in love with psychology and its potential to help children.
