Listen Carefully is a love letter to music. Each week, Australian music journalist Nathan Jolly talks to a different artist about their lives in and around music. Unlike other (unnamed) podcasts that take delight in mining uncomfortably personal topics, or just promote new music while calling it 'fresh content', Listen Carefully gets into the weeds.

  • Never dull - A great listen

Jolly doesn’t get in the way of a story, it breathes, & gets a few pearls from his interviewees. Some tell more of their escapades than the item being promoted but that’s oft the artists.. In all it’s a well rounded chat about the item at hand, influences etc. Have a listen. Usually frank,& intriguing & never boring.

Episode 166: Helen Cattanach - Moler, The Escape Committee
Q: Oh, I meant to ask you as well. You're in a bunch of Spencer P Jones records. How did that come about? Well, you're in his band, right?
Helen explains that she joined Spencer P Jones's circle through prior connections in the Australian music scene, eventually joining his band, Cow Penalty, which evolved into the Escape Committee; baptism by fire through improvised early gigs led to a long collaboration with Spencer.
Episode 166: Helen Cattanach - Moler, The Escape Committee
Q: Is there any stuff from the old days of Moler that hasn't been released, that could be released, like those kind of eight-track things or anything like that?
There is a lot of unreleased material from earlier days, including old tapes and eight-track recordings, some of which were intended for a second record after Golden Duck, but not released due to mix issues or band dynamics; some tracks may surface in the future.
Episode 166: Helen Cattanach - Moler, The Escape Committee
Q: And at what point did it kind of coalesce into an album? Was it just you had enough material and went, we should record this? Or did the idea of an album come first and then you started writing for it?
The shift to an album grew out of rehearsing and writing new material together; after jamming new songs and refining them, they decided to write and record an album, treating it as a collaborative process rather than assembling pre-written tracks.
Episode 167: Katy Steele - Little Birdy
Q: How was that when you were, like, were you still a teenager or maybe 20 when you were, like, playing shows?
Katy recalls the rush and nerves of early performances, the age gap with older bandmates, and how those experiences shaped resilience, stage presence, and the drive to push toward independent music careers.
Episode 167: Katy Steele - Little Birdy
Q: So is that how you enjoy recording generally, like just live in a room and just letting it land? Or are you someone who likes to just make sounds?
She explains that she sits in the middle—value in both live takes for mood and the control of careful studio work, with a preference for live recording when it suits the song and project goals.
