  • Master Class

I'm working my way thru this recent find, and got tired of noting which episodes should be required listening for lighting students, because EVERY episode had SOMEthing that is exceptionally relevant to any student in Lighting Design. The Brothers handle listener questions without talking down to new designers, and going in depth for more advanced designers. It's a master class in Lighting Design at every level.

  • From a listener

Stan: Only good things - I hope I managed to do you and your work justice!

David: too late, I did of course write about Light Talk 😉

Seriously though, the show has a lot going for it. It is one of those things which help make the world a better place. It's got a good balance of serious, solid information, some generally useful life advice, and luminous humour. I also like how everyone is warm and friendly and non-judgemental (my favourite phrase must be Steve's "there are no villains here"!). A... more

LIGHT TALK Episode 473 - "The Most Wasted Bit of Space on the Console!"
Q: How has television lighting changed in the LED era and what differences do you see in design approaches?
Dennis explains that LEDs changed intensity control, color management, and the coordination of power and data, requiring new metering, calibration, and collaboration with data/network specialists, while still relying on traditional tools like color wheels and swatch references for familiar references.
LIGHT TALK Episode 470 - "Auto-Mark is for Beginners - Our Conversation With Kat Morrill"
Q: What advice would Kat give to aspiring lighting designers?
Be present, show up on time, engage with the work, and overcome fear by taking bold steps like freelancing or moving to a new city, because life is short and opportunities come from taking action.
LIGHT TALK Episode 470 - "Auto-Mark is for Beginners - Our Conversation With Kat Morrill"
Q: How has Kat's relationship with programming evolved, and what is the ideal dynamic with a programmer?
The ideal is a collaborative relationship where both designer and programmer speak in terms of lighting goals rather than keystrokes, with the designer focusing on the big picture while the programmer handles the technical execution.
LIGHT TALK Episode 470 - "Auto-Mark is for Beginners - Our Conversation With Kat Morrill"
Q: With a new director, what is Kat's process when starting with a show?
Kat emphasizes reading the script when possible, understanding the director's goals and the emotional/or practical lighting needs, and then collaborating with the technical team to align on the plot's requirements and the show's key moments.
LIGHT TALK Episode 466 - "WE LOVE DOGS (we swear)!!!"
Q: What is the relationship felt or observed between lighting supervisors and the LDs in practice?
Lighting supervisors are trusted partners who know the local crews, gear, and facilities and can offer practical, in-venue solutions that improve efficiency, like suggesting follow spots or remounting for rep shows; their input often guides cuing and logistics.
