  • Always enjoyable

I love listening to this. Ray is a good conversationalist, bringing people through the experience. The content is always fresh, and while I know there’s a script, it never comes across that way. I was especially touch by the emotional elements to episode #495. When that family shared their recognition of the richness of the legacy they are stewards over. It was a sweet moment.

  • Consistently good

Particularly liked the interview with Dave Petterson of Domaine de Broglie in Oregon. Lively repartee compared to some of the establishment stiffs.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Podcast 823 – Gillett Johnson, Co-Proprietor, Barker’s Marque Winery-Waverly Vineyard, Marlborough, New Zealand
Q: How would you describe Marlborough terroir and why is Blind River special?
Blind River sits between the ocean and mountains with unique microclimates and soil profiles; the terroir is made by the climate and soils, and the site provides long hang times and distinctive character that set Marlborough apart from generic Sauvignon Blanc labels.
Podcast 820 – PDO Amyndeon & PGI Florina, Angeliki Iatridou, Alpha Estate, Greece
Q: Are you exporting to the United States, and if so, what portion of production goes there?
Yes, the United States is one of our top three markets, and roughly 15 to 20 percent of exports, about 35 percent of total production, goes to international markets with the US accounting for a sizable share of that.
Podcast 820 – PDO Amyndeon & PGI Florina, Angeliki Iatridou, Alpha Estate, Greece
Q: What is the highest altitude at which you are growing grapes?
The winery ranges from 520 to 750 meters above sea level, with Xenomavro vines around 725 meters, which adds a mineral edge to the wines.
Podcast 820 – PDO Amyndeon & PGI Florina, Angeliki Iatridou, Alpha Estate, Greece
Q: What specific characteristics of the Amithan Terroir first convinced you that this region was capable of producing world class wines?
Altitude, cool climate, and intense sunlight create a balance that allows slow ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic depth, while well-drained soils and the lakes contribute a distinctive tension and regional identity.
Podcast 817 – Dustin Valette, Proprietor, Valette Wines, Healdsburg
Q: But what's one question you've never been asked that you would like to be asked?
I would like to be asked about where society is going with our relationship with alcohol and wine, including how younger generations view consumption, health, and the role of wine in everyday life, which reveals deeper insights into the industry's future direction.
