  • Love it!

Love hearing all the history of the scene. I grew up in LA in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It’s amazing how much of it happened in my backyard. Great podcast. Always gets me motivated to go out to the garage and wrench on one of my cars.

  • I’ve been into air cooled VWs from a young age. I’m not young anymore and took a break for about 5 years. I came across Bill’s podcast when looking for some good books to listen to. Bill is so enthusiastic about this hobby it inspired me to jump back into everything VW. I’ve been binge listening for the last 5 months and I learn something new every day. Not a single boring moment. Bill is the perfect host and ambassador.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 358 Rick Sadler & his Type 4 racing history.
Q: What was one of the most memorable moments in your Type 4 racing journey?
Rebuilding the Type 4 motor for the Schley dragster created a full-circle moment, connecting my early observations at OCIR with the car I eventually helped power, which underscored the long arc of my involvement in the scene.
Ep 358 Rick Sadler & his Type 4 racing history.
Q: What were the key technical innovations that got the Type 4 to perform at higher levels in your builds?
I leaned on collaborations with Lonnie Reed and Ray Stoddard for cam designs and forced air fuel delivery, moved to dry-sump setups for methanol, explored larger displacements, and then advanced head work, including the Type 4 pattern heads, to improve sealing and heat management.
Ep 358 Rick Sadler & his Type 4 racing history.
Q: How did you first get involved with racing, and what drew you to the Type 4 engine?
I started with the Ascot Park dirt track racing scene and, drawn by the big-displacement potential and the challenge, I pursued the Type 4 engine because it offered a unique path to power and reliability, despite the limited aftermarket support at the time.
Ep 350 KARMA: The 1955 Karmann Ghia That Won the Al Slonaker Award | Type 1 Restoration at the Grand National Roadster Show
Q: How do you feel about participating in shows that celebrate craftsmanship over more traditional VW events?
It's refreshing to receive appreciation for the level of detail and craftsmanship that goes into these customized builds, rather than the typical criticism at VW shows.
Ep 350 KARMA: The 1955 Karmann Ghia That Won the Al Slonaker Award | Type 1 Restoration at the Grand National Roadster Show
Q: What sparked your desire to compete for the Al Slonaker Award with Karma?
The Slonaker Award presented a unique opportunity to showcase innovation in VW customization, which was motivating after my experience with Turmoil.
