  • Love it!

Love hearing all the history of the scene. I grew up in LA in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It’s amazing how much of it happened in my backyard. Great podcast. Always gets me motivated to go out to the garage and wrench on one of my cars.

  • I’ve been into air cooled VWs from a young age. I’m not young anymore and took a break for about 5 years. I came across Bill’s podcast when looking for some good books to listen to. Bill is so enthusiastic about this hobby it inspired me to jump back into everything VW. I’ve been binge listening for the last 5 months and I learn something new every day. Not a single boring moment. Bill is the perfect host and ambassador.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 369 Wide Eye Baja Kit with Burly Burlile
Q: How did your involvement with Sandwinder begin and lead to the Baja kit designs?
Burly explains that his initial contact came through purchasing their buggy body and then racing for Sandwinder, which opened doors to creating illustrations and eventually producing the Baja-related kits with Don Rountree, evolving the Sandwinder product line.
Ep 368 Air Cooling Engines with Jake Raby
Q: Why is the DTM system and its packaging considered so effective for daily drivers?
DTM is valued for its packaging and simplicity; it achieves effective cooling without overly aggressive fan setups, enabling reliable operation and better integration with daily-driver usage, even when you factor in AC and other electronics.
Ep 368 Air Cooling Engines with Jake Raby
Q: What has been the most troublesome exhaust setup you've tested and why?
The Dune Buggy Duels and center-mounted center-exit designs were consistently the worst because they disrupt scavenging and cause large temperature deltas across cylinders; proper exhaust pairing with a well-designed collector and primary/secondary lengths is critical for proper scavenging and heat management.
Ep 367 Bill's thoughts on So Cal month & Brian Reed DKP II
Q: How did you end up in DKP2 and what did that club mean to you?
He describes meeting Mike Martinez, joining through the existing DKP network, and how the DKP2 culture fostered pride in perfect cars and mutual support, which kept him connected to the VW scene.
Ep 367 Bill's thoughts on So Cal month & Brian Reed DKP II
Q: What's your VW story and how did you get into Volkswagens?
Brian explains growing up around VW cars, the pull of the hobby during high school, and how he shifted from stock to performance-focused builds, leading to his DKP2 involvement and deeper community ties.
