What would you do if a secret cabal of the nation’s most powerful people asked you to overthrow the President? Weirdly enough – it’s not a hypothetical. It almost happened to FDR in the 1930s, were it not for a very intense, very problematic Marine named Major General Smedley Butler.

I’m only in the 4th episode and I love what I’m hearing. I think this needs to be a required unit in US history classes across America. The wacky voices do an amazing job in keeping my mind focused on the subject so my ADD brain doesn’t wander off on other “what-ifs” relating to the episodes. Am recommending this podcast to fellow history buffs.
If you are taking requests for your next series, could you do “The Battle of Athens” next?
Would have been great without the over the top character voices. They’re a distraction and annoying.
A Gatsby reference in episode one and now Hemingway? How smart!
I already know a lot of general stuff about the coup in question, this comedic dramatization was fun and informative. Love these guys already, so I enjoyed this a lot.

But it wasn’t. The stupid dramatized cutaways absolutely killed the show. This is a hugely important part of American history, especially in light of current events like January 6, and they turned it into a joke.
So much fun. Mostly stuff I was at least marginally aware of. Like Mad magazine meets Howard Zinn. Nicely presented historical hilarity. Worth a listen!

This show blends history, political intrigue, and dark humor to recount little-known and provocative chapters of American history. Episodes swing between demanding questions about power, governance, and democracy, and theatrical retellings featuring multiple characters that bring historical figures to life. The format tends to pair rigorous historical context with satirical or dramatic interludes, which can make complex topics more approachable but sometimes polarizing depending on tolerance for voice performances and comedic framing. Notable throughlines include the fragility of democratic institutions, the influence of money and power, and the ways ordinary people become entwined in extraordinary political plots. A standout aspect is the ... more
