  • The best podcast

I have been listening to this podcast since halfway through 2022 while commuting by car, providing me that much-needed company, stimulation, and entertainment. I am constantly behind schedule, but that's okay, because I love knowing that there is always more LLE waiting for me.

No episode fails to teach me something new while also making me laugh and enjoy the process. Plus, it has even introduced me to other cool podcasts and creators.

    Keep up the amazing work!

Best podcast, funnest hosts, one will at some point eat the others, yada yada, you’ve heard it all before and it’s all true.

I’m on my second listing through, which is great when you have a brain that can only remember Tom‘s [insert adjective of your choice] jokes. Thanks Tom.

  • I am a picky scientist.

This is an amazing show my artistic girlfriend showed me. I genuinely find the hosts lacking in a ton of scientific knowledge, and I love Ella for the froth this will induce. I am a bigger four letter and five letter word combined. You do you. And me be me. Not me a bee.

  • Learning Everything

Absolutely love the podcast and have been listening for years now. In the recast of Ella on that’s absurd I finally learned how wind works! That has been my go to for not understanding this beautifully complex world of ours for many years. Now I get to discover a new blind spot in my understanding! Always looking forward to learning something new. -Patrick

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Recast: Ella on That's Absurd, Please Elaborate
Q: What happens normally when we pee, and what would change if we never peed?
Urination normally removes nitrogenous waste (urea) and regulates fluid and electrolyte balance; the discussion covers the kidney filtration process, the role of the liver in urea production, and potential health risks if urine is not excreted.
111: Astronaut Cady Coleman, Life in Space, and What Astronauts Learn
Q: What odd things does an astronaut have to learn before going into space?
Cady describes the breadth of training, from underwater NEEMO simulations and robotics to medical procedures in microgravity, plus the practicalities of managing life support, suit fitting, and even social dynamics within a crew.
104: The Anthropocene Argument & Sound Effects
Q: Is the Anthropocene an epoch or an event?
There is a long-running debate among scientists: some argue it is a real epoch defined by measurable geological markers, while others, including some scientists, view it as an event or a transitional phase without a single universally agreed boundary; in 2024 the ICS did not formally declare it an epoch.
103: Sage The Bad Naturalist & The Frog Mushroom Mystery
Q: What are your two leading hypotheses about the frog-with-a-mushroom image, and how would you test them?
The two leading ideas are Froggy Got a Splinter (fungus growing from debris under lifted skin) and Xenomorph Dermis (fungus pushing through from within). Sage describes plans to myth-bust using controlled experiments with latex membranes and small mushrooms to assess surface tension and the plausibility of a fruiting body emerging through frog skin.
103: Sage The Bad Naturalist & The Frog Mushroom Mystery
Q: To start off, can you share your journey from illustrator to science communicator?
Sage explains that the path was circuitous and accelerated by a viral video about Froggy Got a Splinter, plus supportive mentors like Hank Green; the shift happened slowly but the audience response helped legitimize the new career.
