  • Gay funny science

I’ve been listening to this pod since the Patreon days and have always enjoyed the mix of science and humorous banter, but what I didn’t realise until recently is that it’s the queer representation and allyship that has made it feel like home and kept me coming back. Keep up the good work guys :) 🐸🏳️‍🌈

  • For people looking for great new pod

This is a great podcast, the hosts are filled with so much energy and are actually excited to learn all the topics. It makes my ever other Thursday

Like lots LLE Fans I came from lateral and one of my favourite things they did was sing major general in a cold outro

  • That was a delightful segue, Ella

I started listening to LLE about a month ago and am already caught up, and yes, I know, it's excessive but what else am I supposed to do when this podcast is just SO damn good??

Tom, Ella, and Caroline really created something that, to me at least, is very special. The world has felt like a dumpster fire for some time now but listening to these three really makes me feel a little better and even a bit hopeful - there are so many cool things to learn, good questions to ask, and so so many people ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

104: The Anthropocene Argument & Sound Effects
Q: Is the Anthropocene an epoch or an event?
There is a long-running debate among scientists: some argue it is a real epoch defined by measurable geological markers, while others, including some scientists, view it as an event or a transitional phase without a single universally agreed boundary; in 2024 the ICS did not formally declare it an epoch.
103: Sage The Bad Naturalist & The Frog Mushroom Mystery
Q: What are your two leading hypotheses about the frog-with-a-mushroom image, and how would you test them?
The two leading ideas are Froggy Got a Splinter (fungus growing from debris under lifted skin) and Xenomorph Dermis (fungus pushing through from within). Sage describes plans to myth-bust using controlled experiments with latex membranes and small mushrooms to assess surface tension and the plausibility of a fruiting body emerging through frog skin.
103: Sage The Bad Naturalist & The Frog Mushroom Mystery
Q: To start off, can you share your journey from illustrator to science communicator?
Sage explains that the path was circuitous and accelerated by a viral video about Froggy Got a Splinter, plus supportive mentors like Hank Green; the shift happened slowly but the audience response helped legitimize the new career.
100: Everything
Q: What is everything made of?
Everything is composed of ordinary matter, dark matter, and dark energy, with 75% being hydrogen, but ordinary matter only makes up about 5% of the universe.
93: Unsolved Math Problems & Video Game Controllers w/ Ellen Weatherford
Q: Ellen, how do you feel about math?
I expressed great confusion over math before, but I'm taking this opportunity to learn and explain concepts.
