  • Really good

Tom Scott’s great, the show is let down a little by the “did you know..?” YouTuber types that don’t have much knowledge beyond their in-jokey niches.

  • Lateral may be the best Podcast ever

I truly think this is the best podcast out there! I especially love the episodes with the hosts of Let's Learn Everything! Tom Scott has such a perfect dynamic with his guests but with Caroline, Ella and Tom Lum, they're really unmatched! I've learnt so many fun facts from this show, it's my go-to podcast for any occasion!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

203: Looking for a hot rod
Q: How has 40% of Argentina's population been affected by the arrival of a Swedish ship in Buenos Aires in 1907?
The discussion converged on the idea that the ship's colors (blue and yellow) inspired the Boca Juniors team colors and that a large portion of the population later supported the team, linking a maritime event to sports fandom.
203: Looking for a hot rod
Q: Francois went to a Chinese restaurant with visiting friends. When he asked for bread, why did his friends incorrectly assume he wanted some bread?
Because the waiter was being misread in a way that linked Francois's French name to a bread-related pun in French (pain), and because the wordplay around bread and dining created confusion that the group tried to unravel with a pun-based reasoning.
182: The calendar goal scorer
Q: What was Prince Harvey doing at the Apple Store, and why didn't he get paid?
He went to the Apple Store to record music using GarageBand; he wasn't paid but benefited from free access to equipment and the potential publicity from his work becoming an album.
182: The calendar goal scorer
Q: In 1978 Norway banned skateboarding nationwide; what was the safety concern?
The discussion settles on safety data around injuries from skateboarding, leading to a broad ban until 1989 as evidence accumulated.
182: The calendar goal scorer
Q: Why is Colombian footballer Hassand Gonzalez nicknamed the calendar goalscorer?
Because his forename is constructed from the initial letters of each month (F-M-A etc. for a stylized spelling), making his nickname a wordplay on the calendar.
