Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Interview with Dr. Craig Martin: Improving RNA production efficiency and quality
Q: How do you envision scaling Duo-Tether from lab to production, and what makes flow reactors advantageous?
Flow reactors allow continuous substrate supply, preventing slowdown and enabling sustained high-rate RNA production, while parallelizing small reactors preserves performance and reproducibility; this approach avoids the tuning required when scaling up batch reactions and aligns with manufacturing needs.
Interview with Dr. Craig Martin: Improving RNA production efficiency and quality
Q: What are the main manufacturing challenges in producing high-quality RNA at scale, and how does Duo-Tether help address them?
Key challenges include purity, removal of DNA, RNA polymerase, and ancillary enzymes, as well as expensive purification steps that reduce yield. The Duo-Tether system reduces contaminants and enables one-to-one polymerase-to-DNA interactions, which can lower purification needs and improve scalability.
Interview with Dr. Craig Martin: Improving RNA production efficiency and quality
Q: Could you tell us about your academic background and how that research led you to Waterfall Scientific?
My lab studied a simple model system, the T7 RNA polymerase, for decades, which laid foundational knowledge that turned out to be highly applicable to manufacturing RNA for therapeutics, ultimately prompting me to co-found Waterfall Scientific to commercialize Duo-Tether technology.
Interview with Dr. Bill Jack: Lessons from Lab & Life at NEB
Q: What advice would you give to colleagues about handling titles and roles in a collaborative environment?
Titles can guide initial introductions, but true progress comes from setting them aside, focusing on collaboration, shared goals, and empowering people to contribute regardless of their formal position.
Interview with Dr. Bill Jack: Lessons from Lab & Life at NEB
Q: What is it that you think makes the research program at New England Biolabs so special and different?
It blends deep, hands-on lab work with support for independent exploration, ensuring researchers stay connected to current tools while also having the freedom to pursue high-risk projects that can lead to meaningful advances and better customer understanding.
