  • Interest insights

This podcast offers interesting insights into a particular agenda promoting North American interests in Latin America, and from a neoliberal economic perspective. It is important to understand this agenda as it exerts a lot of influence, however this is not balanced or objective commentary, is often very disingenuous in its comments on US foreign policy, and presents only a limited perspective from the region. For a fuller understanding of Latin America itself, it is better to look elsewhere.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mercosur, EU, and the New Frontiers of Free Trade
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the sticking points here? What is difficult in an implementation of a deal of that size?
The guest describes dual agreements—the broader EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and the provisional interim trade agreement—emphasizing sensitive sectors like agriculture, animal welfare, biotech, and environmental standards, and explains that dialogues and safeguards are designed to address these issues while the provisional implementation proceeds.
Mercosur, EU, and the New Frontiers of Free Trade
Q: If you think about this past year, we've seen this rearranging of global trade happening. How does the Mercosur-European Union deal fit into this context?
The guest explains that the EU-Mercosur deal is part of a broader push toward diversification of trading partners, highlighting how negotiations began in 1999 and evolved in a world with challenges like US unilateral actions and global overcapacity, while also noting that many governments are seeking more options beyond a US-centric trade map.
The Math Behind Cartel Recruitment in Mexico
Q: What role do social programs and demographics play in addressing recruitment, and what policies look promising?
Social programs can help deter recruitment when targeted toward vulnerable youth with education and jobs, but broad cash transfers tend to benefit the wealthier as well; demography affects recruitment pools, yet policy must pair social investment with targeted outreach to reduce cartel appeal.
The Math Behind Cartel Recruitment in Mexico
Q: How do you model cartel recruitment and why is it difficult to predict who joins?
Recruitment is modeled as a balance between the cartel's offer and the individual's alternative plans; the model also accounts for social incentives, risk of violence, and the limited reliability of arrests, making precise predictions hard but giving a framework to assess pressures and incentives.
The Math Behind Cartel Recruitment in Mexico
Q: What were the key findings of your study on cartel size and employment, and why do you frame cartels as employers?
The study estimates cartels at about 175,000 members, which would place them as the fifth-largest employer in Mexico; this framing helps convey the scale and turnover dynamics of recruitment and retention, beyond viewing cartels purely as criminal entities.
