  • Interest insights

This podcast offers interesting insights into a particular agenda promoting North American interests in Latin America, and from a neoliberal economic perspective. It is important to understand this agenda as it exerts a lot of influence, however this is not balanced or objective commentary, is often very disingenuous in its comments on US foreign policy, and presents only a limited perspective from the region. For a fuller understanding of Latin America itself, it is better to look elsewhere.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jorge Castañeda on the Frictions Straining U.S.-Mexico Ties
Q: Is there a risk of boots on the ground, and how should Mexico respond to such rumors or actions?
The guest argues that while covert or limited operations might occur, a broad, visible deployment is unlikely; the emphasis should be on transparency, diplomacy, and avoiding escalation that could backfire domestically and internationally.
Jorge Castañeda on the Frictions Straining U.S.-Mexico Ties
Q: What should President Sheinbaum do to navigate these complex waters with the United States?
Focus on defining an independent Mexican agenda, avoid unnecessary irritants, and pursue substantive priorities that reflect national interests, while maintaining pragmatic channels of dialogue with Washington.
What Trump and Lula Want from U.S.-Brazil Ties
Q: Can we talk about why now, and what does this meeting say about the relationship?
The meeting reflects a pragmatic approach to bilateral ties, acknowledging fundamental differences while seeking convergence on strategic issues like critical minerals, rare earths, and regional influence, without a sweeping agreement.
What Trump and Lula Want from U.S.-Brazil Ties
Q: My first question for you, it's about timing. Timing for this meeting, since we know this meeting between Lula and Trump, was something Brazil diplomats were working on since the beginning of the year, and it didn't happen right away.
Timing was driven by opportunity and the need to address tariffs and security concerns, with a sense of careful navigation due to domestic political pressures and upcoming electoral considerations in Brazil.
Mercosur, EU, and the New Frontiers of Free Trade
Q: Can you talk a little bit about the sticking points here? What is difficult in an implementation of a deal of that size?
The guest describes dual agreements—the broader EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and the provisional interim trade agreement—emphasizing sensitive sectors like agriculture, animal welfare, biotech, and environmental standards, and explains that dialogues and safeguards are designed to address these issues while the provisional implementation proceeds.
