  • Interest insights

This podcast offers interesting insights into a particular agenda promoting North American interests in Latin America, and from a neoliberal economic perspective. It is important to understand this agenda as it exerts a lot of influence, however this is not balanced or objective commentary, is often very disingenuous in its comments on US foreign policy, and presents only a limited perspective from the region. For a fuller understanding of Latin America itself, it is better to look elsewhere.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Financing Venezuela’s Future in the Aftermath of Disaster
Q: Can you explain the Fund for the Recovery and Reconstruction of Venezuela and how it differs from giving directly to the UN or other organizations?
CAF emphasizes infrastructure financing with deep in-country presence, proven execution capabilities, and no admin or operation fees for the fund, aiming to maximize impact and ensure transparency and trust in resource use.
Financing Venezuela’s Future in the Aftermath of Disaster
Q: What are the big priorities right now for outside supporters beyond search and rescue?
Priorities include health system stabilization with mobile health units, improved water and sanitation, vector control, protection services for vulnerable groups, psychosocial support, and supporting ongoing early recovery efforts to rebuild livelihoods and schools.
Financing Venezuela’s Future in the Aftermath of Disaster
Q: Can you tell us about how you evaluate the situation in Venezuela now and the work that is happening there?
The IRC had started operations in 2018 and has been responding to mass displacement, while detailed assessments show the crisis was already large before the earthquakes; the focus is on shelter, health, WASH, protection, and the need to sustain attention and funding for long-term recovery.
After IEEPA, What Tariff Tools Will Trump Turn to Next?
Q: Diego, what does this Supreme Court decision mean for the Trump administration's tariff policy?
In the short term, it limits the use of Ieepa and shifts the bargaining leverage toward other tools, but in the medium term it pushes the administration to explore slower, more procedural measures that are less legally exposed and subject to congressional oversight.
Sandra Borda on the Figures and Forces behind Colombia’s Presidential Race
Q: What role do international relations and foreign policy strategies play in shaping voters' choices in this race?
Foreign policy preferences could help voters assess 각 candidate's alignment with the United States or China, with de la Espriella signaling closeness to the US and Cepeda pursuing a more balanced approach, potentially engaging in democratic governance toward Venezuela and maintaining regional stability; however, foreign policy is not the sole determinant, as domestic issues like security and economics loom large in voters' minds.
