山口のでんでら野から一望できる景色のうち、特徴的な遺跡や何かの史跡と思われる箇所の説明。
時代も文化もまったく違う、謎の多いふたつの遺跡があり、そこから出土するものにも特に関連性は見られないとのこと。厳しい土地で生きたひとびとの、命の残滓を感じる一遍です。
本作中では、柳田國男は「蓮台野」と呼んでいますが、「でんでら野」のほうが一般的に知られているため、タイトルと文中の呼称が異なります（蓮台野と書いた理由もしっかり研究されていますが、本稿では割愛します）。

現在も9月におこなわれる「遠野まつり」では、各集落ごとの神楽舞があるそうです。ほぼ「獅子舞」の頭と同じものでしょうか。喧嘩っ早く、子どもの頭などを噛んで悪いものを取ってくれる神様。地域の神として、とても親しみやすい感じがあります。

柳田国男『遠野物語』は文語（古文というほどではない）で書かれていますが、こちらは分かりやすい現代日本語（口語）に訳されています。
「意訳」とされていますが、逐語訳ではないものの、かなり正確な訳です。
いままで『遠野物語』を読んでみたかったけれど、文語文で挫折していた方にお勧めです。
