徳川家光より剣の師範に招かれるほどの達人ながら、在野で暮らすことを選んだ別所内蔵充（くらのすけ）のもとには、教えを乞おうと多くの武士たちが訪れます。しかし内蔵充は何処へ行ったものやら、長らく留守の続けています。帰りを待つ侍たちは思い思いに日々を過ごします。
新美南吉には久助君という少年が登場する＜久助もの＞と呼ばれる少年小説の作品群があります。その一つです。大きな事件が起こるわけではありませんが、なにげない日常の出来事のなかで、揺れ動く少年の心の綾が描かれ、自らの子どもの頃を思い出しジワリと沁みてくる作品です。
