お婆さんは一人暮らしの長い夜を、繕いものをしながら過ごします。目が弱ってきて針仕事もつらくなってきたようです。月の出た或る夜、そんなお婆さんに変わった客が訪れます。そしてお婆さんは、いつもと違う不思議な夜を過ごすことになります。
手練れの掏摸が刑事につけられています。気づいているのかいないのか、混雑した乗り合い自動車（バス）に乗ると、女性客の態度が癪に障り、その立ち居振る舞いに立腹します。そんなさなか目の前に、まさに掏ってくれと言わんばかりのカモが現れました。掏摸は一計を案じ、ひと騒ぎを仕掛けます。
「戸隠では、蕈と岩魚に手打蕎麦」、これまで何度も戸隠を訪れている津村信夫は、そこで出会った夏の終わりの出来事、秋の宿での食膳、そして山の月と蕎麦打ちの様子を思い出します。山里の森閑とした月夜の晩の風情を感じる短編です。
