子の行く末を考えない親はいません。悩んだ末、わずかな行動や会話から、子をその道に導いた話を耳にすることはよくあります。ここに登場するのは、親がちょっと心配するような子供です。親は日ごろの行動を見て、とにかく自分の力で暮らして欲しい思い、大きな可能性までに考えが及びません。短い作品ですが、横光利一のなかでも重視されている一作です。
碓氷峠を越えて佐久平と向かっていくと、寒さのなかに春の気配を感じます。そして長野から湯田中へ信州の奥へと向かうほど、漂う風情は春がまだ遠いことを感じさせます。わずかな旅の間に自然の中で季節を行き来する心情を描いた随筆です。
芥川龍之介の処女作です。大正３年、東京帝国大学在学中の２２歳の時に「新思潮」に掲載されました。現代とは違い江戸に生まれ暮す若者にとって浄瑠璃や芸が身近ではあったとはいえ、このような老成した題材を高い技巧で描いた若き天才の登場は衝撃的であったことでしょう。
