列車で鼻持ちならない男たちや人目を引く派手な女と乗り合わせた男は、不快になりながらも彼らの振る舞いをつい観察してしまいます。作者の南部修太郎は大正から昭和の初めにかけて創作活動に取り組んだ小説家で、芥川龍之介に師事し「龍門の四天王」の一人とされていました。「三田文学」の編集主幹を務めるとともに、三田派の作家として多くの作品を残しました。
身近な人を亡くした時の悲しみや悼む気持ちはいつも時代も変わりませんが、弔い方は時代によって変わってきました。昭和の戦後になると冠婚葬祭の様式が一般的に広まって、多くの人が参列する会になりましたが、令和の今は身内だけの小さな会が増えています。何事にも一言ある坂口安吾は、当時の葬儀の形式をあまり好まなかったようです。
昭和の戦前から線中期に発行されていた武道専門誌「新武道」に掲載された短編です。水戸光圀に仕えることになった兵法者を主人公に、武士の心得、身の処し方が描かれます。武士として自分を磨き腕に覚えがあるほど、自分を殺し主君に使えることの難しさが浮き彫りになります。
その箱根の湯の宿は、清流に住む河鹿の声が聞こえてくるような静謐な場所にありました。そこで女三人の親子連れが同宿するようになってから、夜になると不思議な声が聞こえてくるようになったのです。
