かつて西日本の各地には犬神にまつわる迷信が信じられており、狐憑きのように犬に憑りつかれると、家族まで犬神の筋と呼ばれて地域から特別視され、婚姻などでも特殊な掟にしばられていたそうです。医学博士で日本の探偵小説の黎明期に活躍した小酒井不木が、その犬神信仰を題材に創作した怪奇小説です。
歌人の正岡子規は、生来食いしん坊の大食漢で、病の床にありながらも食事を待ちかねています。膳が運ばれて来るまでの間、どこかから聞こえてくる声や、身のまわりの様子に注意を払い、心に置き留めていきます。過ぎていくちょっとした時間をスケッチした掌編です。
江戸は寛政の頃、上杉鷹山の命を受けた一行が、薬草を探すために山の奥深くの閉ざされた村を訪ねた。藩と繋がりのある村ではあるが、里人にとっては滅多になる余所者の来訪。一行は村一番の長者の家に迎え入れられるが、自分たちを見張るような姿なき視線を感じる。この村には独特の掟があるようだ。
歌人で小説家の水野葉舟は、大正期に心霊や怪談の収集研究に没頭します。柳田国男と深い親交を持ち、代表作の「遠野物語」を怪異譚として高く評価しました。近代化に向かう当時の日本各地で伝承されていた怪談にも詳しく、それらの逸話の一つを取り上げた掌編です。
