山本周五郎が昭和9年に発表した作品で、時代ものではなく書いた時代を舞台とした当世小説です。旅の滞在先で知り合った老人の話から、人生のかけ違いや、もしかするとありえたもう一つの人生について、しみじみと考えさせられる作品です。
貴金属店に勤める清三は、仕事を終えた帰り道、男に尾行されているような気がする。徐々にそれは確信に変わる。なぜなら清三には心当たりがあった。尾行されているうちに、やましい思いに追い詰められ、清三は一つの決心をして行動に出ますが・・・。
夏の海岸の岩かげにいると、別れ話が聞こえてきます。別れを言い渡す女が気になり、その姿をかげからのぞき見ると、あまりにも魅力的で、忘れられなくなってしまう。夏の休暇が終わり戻った街で、思わぬ時に、思わぬ場所で女と再会します。その女の正体こそ、最も思いかけないものでした。

プロの方の朗読が聞けてとても嬉しいです。助詞の読み方と、長さ、文の抑揚、アクセントなど本当にプロの話し方で素晴らしいです。
また、私自身、明治や大正に書かれた話を読むのが好きなので、毎回楽しみです。
