粋人の旦那に囲われ、そのおかげで芸事に通じ教養を身につけて一流の芸者になったものの、彼女の幸せはそこに無く、つまらぬことで恵まれた環境から逃げてしまいます。その出来事を題材に話し合う大正時代のインテリたちの会話に、高踏的な憂鬱が感じられる作品で、当時の芥川の心境を映し出した作品とも言われています。
各地が焦土と化した敗戦から、日本はわずか十数年で高度成長の波に乗り復興を成し遂げます。終戦直後は一家の支柱を喪失した家族も多く不安のなかで道徳も乱れましたが、復興とともに家族の幸福も取り戻されていました。戦後の混乱期に秘密の出来事を共有した二人が、偶然再会し探り合うようなやりとりをはじめます。
芥川龍之介の切支丹物と言われるジャンルの作品です。処刑場に引き出されたキリシタンの少女は、崇高な信仰心と俗世を生きる人間の現実との間で揺れ動きます。宗教の殉じた少年を描き傑作と評される「奉教人の死」と対をなす作品で、時を経るにつれ再評価の声が高まっている短編です。
