粋人の旦那に囲われ、そのおかげで芸事に通じ教養を身につけて一流の芸者になったものの、彼女の幸せはそこに無く、つまらぬことで恵まれた環境から逃げてしまいます。その出来事を題材に話し合う大正時代のインテリたちの会話に、高踏的な憂鬱が感じられる作品で、当時の芥川の心境を映し出した作品とも言われています。
