忠臣蔵四十七士で唯一生き残った寺坂吉右衛門。後世様々な研究解釈がなされていますが、直木三十五はこのように見立てています。主君の無念を果たす討ち入りは、武士の本懐ともいえる名誉ある行いです。選ばれて参加するには、それ相応の身分でなければいけません。ところが寺坂はその身分にありませんでした。
承認欲求を満たすためにSNSに投稿する人が少なくないと言われます。時代をさかのぼると、新聞の「人生案内」や「身の上相談」の欄が同じような役割をしていたようです。坂口安吾が自分の書いたものが新聞に掲載され、多くの人に読まれる気持ち良さに憑りつかれた男について書いた短編です。
グツグツと煮える牛鍋を囲んでいるのは、夫を亡くした女と幼い娘、そして亡き夫の友人。食欲の思うままに肉を喰らう男は、娘に肉を与えようとしません。人間の本能と欲望が、食卓でのやり取りから浮かび上がります。
その場の勢いで間違いをしでかしてしまい街を彷徨う男の脳裏には、さまざまな出来事が浮かんでは消えていきます。ついさっきまで友人と愉しく飲んでいたのに、状況が一変してしまいました。追い詰められ、自己肯定し、昔を思い出し、男は逃げ続けます。
