活動写真館の楽団に所属するセロ（チェロ）奏者ゴーシュは、うまく弾くことが出来ずに楽団長に叱られてしまいます。その日を境に毎晩遅く動物たちが訪ねて来るようになり、怒ったり面倒臭がったりしながらも、動物たちの相手をしながら演奏することになってしまいます。
明治に入り琵琶湖から京都へ水を引くために、疎水工事が行われました。そして岡崎公園近くの疎水にかかった古い橋が、いつしか京都の自殺の名所となります。たまたまその近くに住んだ老婆が、川に身投げした自殺者に竿を突き出して救い、報奨金を得たのをきっかけに、いつしか身投げを救うことが生業になったのです。
江戸開城後、上野の山に立てこもった彰義隊を新政府が征伐するという前日、住民が避難し閑散となった町に残った乞食は入りこんた町屋で、猫を連れに戻ってきた女と待ち合わせします。そこで乞食が良からぬ気持ちを抱き、女は猫を巡って貞操と尊厳の選択を迫られることになります。
かつて西日本の各地には犬神にまつわる迷信が信じられており、狐憑きのように犬に憑りつかれると、家族まで犬神の筋と呼ばれて地域から特別視され、婚姻などでも特殊な掟にしばられていたそうです。医学博士で日本の探偵小説の黎明期に活躍した小酒井不木が、その犬神信仰を題材に創作した怪奇小説です。
