大正時代の東京。夜遅くまで働き会社を出たあと、終電の時間が過ぎるまで同僚と飲んでしまった。そんな時間に駅の片隅のうずくまっているやせ細った少年を発見する。そこからちょっとした善意と正義感で、少年を家に届けることになったのだが、どうやら家庭は複雑で、子供への愛情のかけらも感じられない。そして善意と正義感は思わぬ結果をもたらすことになる。
小説の魔術師、多面体作家と言われた久生十蘭の面目躍如。小説のジャンルを横断して、人間の愛の本質に触れながら、サスペンスのように読ませていく不思議な味わいの短編小説です。歌手で作家としても評価されているさだまさしさんが、強く印象に残っている作品のひとつと語っています。
