Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jeff Gray on Building a Career in Continuous Improvement
Q: What is your approach to leading CI work in an organization?
He emphasizes collaborating with frontline employees, using a 'discovery' process with leadership, and ensuring improvements come from the workforce with clear metrics, training, and sustained engagements so teams own the changes.
Jeff Gray on Building a Career in Continuous Improvement
Q: Where did that spark first get started for you?
Jeff describes a pivotal moment in a Boeing hangar where a quality crisis led to drastic resource deployment and the realization that the problem was a process issue, not just a person issue. This sparked his lifelong focus on process improvement and CQI/Lean transitions.
Jess Orr on What Leaders Get Wrong About Transformation
Q: What were the key factors that helped sustain improvements after a project ended?
Having a dedicated CI resource at sites, support from a coaching network, and a transparent, data-driven ROI justification helped sustain gains beyond the initial project.
Jess Orr on What Leaders Get Wrong About Transformation
Q: What was it like getting hired at Toyota and how long were you there?
I was there for about three to four years, starting as a contractor, moving into quality engineering and mass production, and learning a servant-leadership culture that deeply influenced my approach to CI.
Jess Orr on What Leaders Get Wrong About Transformation
Q: So for you, what was that moment where you had that spark?
A mechanical engineer by training, I realized I preferred the production floor to drafting on a computer, when I started Six Sigma Black Belt training and saw how statistics could be applied to real-world improvements, which led me to Toyota and a lifelong focus on CI.
