Cosmic Horror and a Crime Procedural: CJ Leede's Headlights
Q: What was the inspiration for headlights?
The image of people waking up on the roadside wearing the skin of others sparked the premise, with a male protagonist emerging and a journey of grief, memory, and the search for meaning guiding the narrative.
Cosmic Horror and a Crime Procedural: CJ Leede's Headlights
Q: What was it kind of like using horror to explore themes like grief?
Horror allowed me to confront big, non-realistic questions about death and what happens to loved ones, while letting me explore grief through a symbolic lens and with room for plausible, emotionally resonant moments.
Cosmic Horror and a Crime Procedural: CJ Leede's Headlights
Q: What was your journey to writing in general?
I kind of stumbled into writing in my early 20s, thought I'd be a historian, wrote a book quickly, and later found my path through writing programs, ultimately discovering I was a horror writer.
MacKenzie Green is the Global Head of Social for Audible!
Q: Is there anything that surprised you or you weren't expecting in this role or environment?
The guest shares surprised by how few people actually read books, the importance of personal taste in choosing what to read, and the realization that reading culture and accessibility, especially through audiobooks, can dramatically widen who engages with stories.
MacKenzie Green is the Global Head of Social for Audible!
Q: Now, with so much of your job being about promoting books and getting them in front of people, what does it feel like to do that now?
The guest describes it as incredibly exciting and meaningful, emphasizing a shared mission to get more people reading and to push empathy through stories, while highlighting the collaborative, brand-building potential of tying book storytelling to real-world marketing and media work.
