  • Unimpressed

Kerre Woodham used to seem like a really smart, sunny personality, but on this show she’s biased, bitter & frankly, unimaginative. It’s not the Woodham I remember. When she has had another perspective on the show I sometimes thought she’ll “get it”, but sadly no. I’m disappointed.

Dr Michael Swanson: Otago University political commentator on whether there's a case for MMP reform
Q: Why do some parties with modest vote shares still exert outsized influence under MMP?
Swanson explains that coalition dynamics, list rankings, and strategic negotiations can grant disproportionate sway to smaller parties or influential leaders, which can be both a strength of proportional systems and a source of frustration for voters.
Dr Michael Swanson: Otago University political commentator on whether there's a case for MMP reform

The guest suggests there is no inherent issue with reviews, but cautions that frequent generation-to-generation referenda are unusual and should be balanced with stable, long-term considerations about how the system functions.
Dr Michael Swanson: Otago University political commentator on whether there's a case for MMP reform
Q: What would make MMP better in your mind?

Dr Michael Swanson: Otago University political commentator on whether there's a case for MMP reform
Q: Would STV have been a better system with hindsight? Do you still think MMP is the best system for governing a country?
Dr. Swanson indicates that while STV offers an interesting alternative, it likely would have delivered similar outcomes in many scenarios, and he remains cautious that STV may not be simpler for voters. He implies MMP has generally worked well and should be improved rather than scrapped.
Christopher Luxon: Prime Minister on a MMP referendum, MP perks, comments to business leaders
Q: Should there be another referendum on MMP and possibly a four-year term?
Luxon expresses openness to a referendum on the four-year term and whether New Zealanders still want MMP, viewing it as a constitutional check and balance.
