Prefer only long format podcasts 30 minutes to 2 hours so my playlist doesn’t get spammed so can turn on automatic downloads. Keep up the good content thanks.

  • Unimpressed

Kerre Woodham used to seem like a really smart, sunny personality, but on this show she’s biased, bitter & frankly, unimaginative. It’s not the Woodham I remember. When she has had another perspective on the show I sometimes thought she’ll “get it”, but sadly no. I’m disappointed.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Bryce Edwards: Political analyst on the response to MPs using taxpayer-funded entitlements
Q: What is it? Are we paying them above the odds for their talent and giving them perks because they're so bright or because they don't have any options once they leave?
The discussion suggests that MPs receive a mix of high salaries and extensive allowances, which can appear excessive when contrasted with ordinary citizens' financial challenges, and that there is a perceived but not fully enforced separation between public service and private-sector opportunities after leaving Parliament; reform is needed to ensure accountability and fairness.
Richard Chambers: Police Commissioner takes talkback, discusses Rakesh Naidoo, arming police, sentencing
Q: Do you support routinely arming the police, or is body cameras the next step?
The commissioner says he would prefer not to routinely arm the police, but if circumstances required it, a public discussion would be necessary, while noting that firearms are already more accessible and that training and de-escalation are central to policing now.
Tania Tapsell: Local Government NZ Board Member and Rotorua Mayor on the changes to council voting rights
Q: How does this reform affect communities like Rotorua and broader New Zealand politics?
The guest highlights that independent voices have value for local deliberations across the country, including rural and lake communities, and she stresses the need for broad discussion and proper testing of reforms before implementation to protect community interests.
Tania Tapsell: Local Government NZ Board Member and Rotorua Mayor on the changes to council voting rights
Q: What are the potential unintended consequences of removing voting rights from non-elected members?
She emphasizes concerns about the rapid change to the law and the risk that losing voting power could reduce valuable input, while still acknowledging the importance of independent perspectives. She calls for careful consideration and input to avoid negative outcomes for local governance.
Tania Tapsell: Local Government NZ Board Member and Rotorua Mayor on the changes to council voting rights
Q: Why would non-elected members have voting rights on council committees?
The guest explains that independent members often bring essential expertise and experience to specific committees, like audit and risk, which can enhance decision-making even if they are not elected. She notes that some of these members are elected in other contexts and argues the change aims to leverage expertise to improve governance.
