为了看清细胞内的物质，科学家们将目标分子标记上荧光分子。在特定激发光的照射下，这些分子发出荧光，从而“点亮”所要观察的对象。荧光蛋白(FP)的发现，因此荣获2008年诺贝尔化学奖。
然而，生命的复杂性远超想象。即使拥有多种荧光颜色，仍难以同时追踪多个动态过程，而新颜色的开发又受限于可见光谱的物理边界。色彩已近极限，路在何方？
